Essence of Rose III, watercolour, full sheet (21 x 29"). My third painting of my favorite rose, Royal Sunset, a climber. At its peak, this rose has close to 100 blooms on it! I planted it 25 years ago and most of its blooms are too tall for the deer to reach. The first two Essence of Rose paintings were a more delicate, intimate, close-up view of this rose, this painting is much bolder and focuses on all the different colours that can be seen within just one rose. I also include a much deeper coloured rose behind. I have a bouquet in my house now where each of 6 roses is a slightly different colour, from orange to coral to pale pink to deep pink, and one is even golden. I wanted a more vibrant painting this time, so I used deep, cool colours for the background, and stronger colours in the main rose, though of course I included luminous passages, where the sunlight streams through the petals. I think I put this vase with two flowers on the windowsill to get the backlit photos. Because the background rose is younger and has denser petals, which don’t allow the sun to pe*****te as easily, it is a very deep orange. This painting has a different, more vibrant mood than the two previous versions of this rose, I think it captures the exhilarating feeling I have when I see the richness and depth of colour a single rose can hold, along with the magnificent fragrance I attempt to portray with some of the little dots of light in the air.
