The room first, then the three details it is built on.

A large panel and a door, satin brass, and hardware placed where it will not interrupt anything. The ladder pull. The bottom pivot sitting on the curb. The pull again, against fluted white oak.

Nothing here is at eye level. That was the whole brief.

Cut by hand, one piece at a time.

Clear mirror in tiles, rosettes at the joints to finish the antique read, and the top course cut to follow the arch above the vanity. Every piece in that run is its own template, and there is no second try on a cut like that.

A powder bath is where this look earns its keep. Dark stone, brass, and a wall that gives the room back more light than it actually has.

The first two frames are the door shut: the grid squared up, and a close look at where the panel meets the floor. Swipe on and the door is parked off to the side.

That is the argument for a slider on an opening this wide. Furniture goes in and out. The room breathes. Nothing swings into the entry.

Heather Brecl walked the house with us and started where most buyers start now. The office.

Glass as the wall instead of drywall, so the room reads as part of the floor plan instead of a box cut out of it. The door slides, which means it is never in the office and never in the entry. Soft brakes catch it at both ends.

Black track to match the steel beams. Inch-and-a-half flat bar and an extra-tall ladder pull to finish it.

The cattail fixtures were already there. They happen to run the same direction as the grid.

We were told satin brass. We did not see the room until the open house.

When you measure a shower you ask what the finishes are. Sometimes you are matching plumbing that is already in. Sometimes you are matching a line on a schedule. Here it was the schedule.

Then we walked it. The fixtures are black with satin brass accents, and every part a hand actually lands on is brass. The hardware matches exactly.

What we did not plan for is what the brass does with the light coming through, against tile made to read like wood. Warm on warm.

Straight on, the grid does all of it.

Inch-and-a-half flat bar in matte black, set to line up with the steel running through the rest of the house. Swipe for the pull: 72 inches, mounted so the tube and the flat bar never crowd each other.

From the hallway the whole thing reads as part of the millwork. That was the point.

Both sides of this shower were meant to be looked at. That is what makes it hard.

So the glass had to read as a wall, not a frame. A large panel, minimal hardware, and nothing sitting in the sight line. Top and bottom pivots carry an extra-large door from the header and the curb instead of the jamb, which is why there is no hinge at eye level.

Satin brass on every part a hand touches. The fixtures inside are black, on purpose.

Fluted white oak, marble, and afternoon light doing the rest.

A panel, a door, another panel. That is the whole opening.

Inch-and-a-half flat bar in a grid, matte black, hung on a Bohle Master Track. Soft brakes in both directions, so you can push it open or slide it closed, let go, and the door catches itself and settles.

The pull is 72 inches. At that height the handle stops being hardware and becomes the line your eye follows.

The office gets its privacy. The house keeps its light.

Every system like this is drawn in CAD before we set foot on the job.

A loft bath with a vaulted ceiling, and a stall that had to sit square underneath it.

Door, panel, return, with a stationary transom above on square clamps in place of a header. Wall-mount hinges in oil-rubbed bronze, channel below, six-inch square pull, mitered corner.

The ceiling does the drama. The glass only has to stay out of its way.

The corner is where a stall like this is won or lost.

Where the panel meets the return we mitered both edges, so the corner closes as a single line instead of one piece lapping the other. Above it, a stationary transom set on a row of square clamps does the work an aluminum header would have done, without the extrusion.

Oil-rubbed bronze throughout. Wall-mount hinges, channel below, six-inch square pull.
