My daughter’s first year of life we spent countless nights in different hospitals.

We missed a lot of “firsts” and holidays at home. Mother’s Day, my 30th birthday, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s and so many regular days in between.

When you’re in a hospital room for days or weeks at a time, you feel separated from the outside world. Sometimes the only connection you have to it is a window.

And I remember those windows.

In some rooms the shades were broken or stuck shut. We couldn’t see outside and somehow it made an already small hospital room feel even more confining.

In other rooms the shades wouldn’t come down. The sun would pour in, making the room hot and bright when we were exhausted, scared, and already running on empty. At one point we were using hospital pads against the window just to fight the glare.

It gave me a completely different appreciation for something that seems so simple.

Window coverings aren’t just about making a room look pretty.

They give you control over your space when so much else can feel out of your control. They let the light in when you need it and block it when you don’t. They give you privacy and security. They can help keep a room cooler and more comfortable. And sometimes they simply let you open the shade and remember there’s a whole world outside that room.

Most of the time we don’t think twice about our window coverings.

Until we need them.

Maybe that’s part of why I care so much about what I do🤍
