What does wear layer mean in flooring? And does it matter?

If you’ve been floor shopping, you’ve probably heard the term “wear layer” before. Wear layer is the thin protective coating on flooring that protects it from scratches, dents, and scuffs. The thicker the wear layer = the better the durability.

Wear layer is measured in mils, meaning 1 mil is 1/1000 of an inch.

6-mil wear layer = light residential
12-mil wear layer = residential standard
20-mil wear layer = heavy residential and light commercial

Here are a few quick rules that make a real difference:

🛋️ All front legs of your sofa and chairs should sit ON the rug, not float beside it.

📐 Leave at least 12 to 18 inches of bare floor visible between the rug edge and the walls.

🔲 In open floor plans like this one, use rugs to define zones. Each seating or dining area gets its own rug, letting the hardwood flow between them.

🎨 Layering two rugs adds texture and depth without requiring a bigger rug.
