The Loom Room

The Loom Room Offering from our family farm in Northern California: fleece, roving, yarn, hand-spun, hand-woven, hand-knit, heirloom garments. Alpaca, Merino, & Angora.

In 1996, Gabrielle came home one day with a spinning wheel and told her mother, “I want to get 4 sheep: a black one, a white one, a brown one, and a gray one.” Her mother enthusiastically responded, “No, no, no! You want to get alpacas!” “Al-a-what?” Within a few months, Gabrielle was bottle raising her first lamb and her mother bought her first alpacas. After raising a menagerie of fiber-prod

ucing animals over the years, Gabrielle settled her focus on breeding naturally colored merinos and French Angora rabbits. Her mother, Cheryl Woods of Fanfare Farms, continued with alpacas. Raising the animals and spinning a variety of fibers has given Gabrielle a unique perspective on what is desirable in a fleece and which yarns are best suited for specific end uses. This knowledge and experience has resulted in her earning top awards in both local and national fiber arts competitions, is a sought-after instructor, and fleece/fiber judge. Spin, weave, knit, crochet, felt, dye – she does it all. Gabrielle has served on the Board of Directors of the Northern California Angora Guild and for the National Angora Rabbit Breeders Club. She is also a past-President of the Lambtown USA Festival. In 2007, she attended the Camelid Fiber Sorting and Grading Certification course, and completed the Camelid Fiber Classer Course in 2011 through Olds College in Alberta, Canada. She owned and operated FiberWise Mill doing custom fiber processing. In 2016, she became of one of first Alpaca Owners Association Accredited Spin-Off Judge.

102°F today and definitely wanted an indoor project.
I grabbed a skein of my handspun 50% alpaca, 35% wool, 15% silk yarn;
whipped up a quick microwave dye inspired by the blossoming hydrangeas (green, blue, pink);
hung it on my garden fence to dry (did NOT take long because it's so hot today!);
wove it into a buttonhole scarf on my Ashford rigid heddle lap loom.

Alpaca shearing! I'm giving this sweet girl a pedicure while she's getting her neck fiber clipped. I LOVE gray! Did you know: alpacas have "toenails" not "hooves"?!

It's shearing season!!! We call shearing day "health and beauty day" since it's a great opportunity to trim teeth, give vaccinations, dewormer, apply anti-parasitics, trim toenails, check body score, AND get a haircut. It's always fun to see "the big reveal" from each alpaca's "makeover haircut". 🤩

Getting ready to warp the loom for tomorrow's Open Studio! The other vendors are setting up in my backyard. The dye pot station is ready to go! The weather is perfect. Fresh grapefruit juice from the tree. Will you be coming tomorrow?! 9a-4p Sat Oct 2.
This is a FREE event! We sell roving, yarn, and finished items from the wool and alpaca fiber grown on our farm in Vacaville, CA. With the Covid lockdowns and fire evacuation, we really, really, truly need sales from our products to fund the farm.
Are you a knitter? Weaver? Crochet? Felter? Dyer? Have one if your life that would love the gift of yarn or fiber or wool? How about an alpaca beanie hat? Don't have one? I've got you covered! Need an alpaca lap blanket to cozy up with on the couch for winter? My handwoven wool and alpaca blankets are better than any fake acrylic/polyester/nylon petroleum based fiber product you'll find at Costco. Order a blanket that tells a story. A local story ... of a mom... raising the fourth generation of ranchers in her family... where every animal has a name and their own story. Like "Windstorm", the merino ewe who got her name after we had a tornado touch down on our property and flipped one of the sheep barns upside down onto it's roof... killing three of our sheep and leaving "Windstorm" with a broken leg. Or "Butterfly" the merino ewe that has a spot on her nose that is the shape of a butterfly. "49er" and her daughter "Clementine". "Ramington Steele" has fleece the color of a sharp knife. "Avalanche" cascades with nealy 20 lbs of crimpy merino wool every year when we shear him. "Shadow" ... came out of the shadows to surprise us all with his shockingly low 15-micron histogram. "Surprise" was the lamb that decided to try coming out breech instead of nose first. (One of the very few times that I had to help a mama birth her baby.) "Great Scott", "Great Gatsby", "Re'Pete' Performance", "Elegant Legacy", "B.B. Bean", ... With over 100 individuals, I can tell you something about who contributed to every skein of yarn, every blanket, every sweater, every hat. This is deeply personal to me. Every skein tells the story of that year. It's my harvest. And I want to share it with you.
