Being a cowgirl means more than just the clothes we wear, the horses we ride, or the job we do. A cowgirl is a person who upholds the values that were set before her by the original cowgirls. Those values of integrity, loyalty, and diligence are the foundation of the breed, coupled by a sheer toughness that is coated in a thick layer of grace.

Being a cowgirl is a role we play in our families, on our properties, and in our communities. It means being able enough to work alongside the men when needed, to being classy enough to step back and support when the time comes for that too. It means caring for our home, land, and animals the way God blessed us to as stewards of those gifts. It means stepping up to help those weaker than us, and having the humility to build up those who are stronger.

Being a cowgirl is about being strong enough to handle adversity. Building up that strength is a choice that must be made every day. As a cowgirl, you don’t shy at the hard jobs, the fresh horses, or the tough conversations. You choose to enter each day with a strength that is God-given and human-developed.

Being a cowgirl requires bravery in every situation. It takes courage and heart to deal with adversity, in order to make the most of it, and not get whipped by it. It means taking over the reins even when you feel inferior, and telling yourself “I am capable” until you believe it. Knowing it is never easy, but always worth it, and staring fear in the eyes until fear is the one scared of you.

Being a cowgirl is someone we can all be. We all possess a little bit of cowgirl on the inside, and if or how we choose to raise up that cowgirl is up to us. I challenge you to find your inner cowgirl, and tell her its time to put our big girl boots on and deal with it. We cowgirls thrive on tough, because we’re made of it.

“There’s something different about the way a good mare connects with her rider. It’s special. Like an unspoken agreement. Once a mare chooses you as her person, it’s like she has an instinct to protect you, to fight for you. It’s almost as if she takes ownership of you.

I believe the good mares have a deep sense of intuition. They can read your mind. They know what you’re thinking even before you do. The good mares I know breathe fire in the face of challenge and then somehow, miraculously, know to quiet themselves when a timid child is plopped on their back for a pony ride.

They are clever, cunning and calculated, which can be your greatest enemy or your saving grace. The good mares I know do not tolerate egotistical riding. They do not tolerate force. They demand tact, finesse and emotional control. But once you have won a mare’s heart, you have won all of her. In exchange for your best—and nothing less—she will give you everything.”

Dear Cowgirl,

I hope you heal from the things you don’t speak about.

I hope the wild dreams you indulge in before falling asleep actually happen.

I hope you tell that guy or gal you love them, like them, or just want to be around them without the fear of rejection.

I hope you look in the mirror and adore what you see.

I hope you let animals, wide open spaces, and conversations with your grandparents slow you down and remind you of what is important in life.

I hope you remember we are not here for long. I miss many souls whom I knew for three, thirteen, and twenty-three years...only to have them taken away in the blink of an eye.

Please don’t live halfway.

Tell people you love them, jump in the truck, and take the trip you’ve always wanted or embark on a new career.

Stop self sabotaging and start believing in the God given power you already have.

Nurture it.
Grow it.
Feed it.
Own it.

Stop living halfway.

Please be the woman that is always learning.

Please be the woman that chooses to chase happiness and true peace instead of what the world and media say.

Please be the woman that decides to be brave, to heal and loves without fear.

Please be the woman that is able to say when she is wrong and asks others for grace.

Please be the woman that creates something special, something to lift others up and gives back to the community around her.

Please be the woman who understands that life is short and joy is something you must work for.

Please be the woman you always imagined. Stop waiting for a distant day in the future when you’ll be deserving of love.

Stop waiting for her to find meaning, find love or to lose those extra 10 pounds.
