Boston has a long history with chocolate. Some of America’s earliest chocolate making happened there in the 1700s, when cocoa beans arrived through Boston’s busy shipping ports and were turned into drinking chocolate for New England kitchens.

WANETA COCOA was produced by the Massachusetts Chocolate Company in Boston during the early 1900s through the 1930s. At the time, cocoa was marketed as a pure and nutritious food product — even recommended for invalids and convalescents.

This WAN-ETA COCOA mason jar is a wonderful survivor from that era. What fascinates me most is the packaging itself. Imagine heading to the pantry and scooping cocoa from an embossed glass jar instead of today’s plastic containers. The warm amber glass, bold lettering, and simple utilitarian design make it such a beautiful example of early advertising and everyday kitchen history. The dark glass served a practical purpose protecting its contents from sunlight degradation.

I can just picture it sitting on a pantry shelf beside a wood cookstove on a cold Maine morning, waiting for baking days and cups of hot cocoa. Today, it would make such a fun gift for a chocolate lover, coffee bar, or vintage kitchen collection.

There’s something special about costume jewelry that was made to last—and to be worn.

Pieces from brands like Napier, Trifari, and Sarah Coventry weren’t just accessories—they were thoughtfully designed and made with an attention to detail that’s hard to find today.
