Athena Makes Thank you for viewing my page. My speciality is making hand embroidered hoop art pictures, and OOAK jewellery designs. Designs are not water proof or resistant.

Terms & Conditions;-

Embroidery;- All my hand embroidery designs are either my own, or are licensed designs. They are not to be copied, or used in any way without my written permission. Most designs are OOAK, as they are freehand. Similar designs may be produced, but there will be some differences. Goldwork;- Goldwork is a traditional form of embroidery that utilises fine wires that are surface stitched to create designs. By the nature of the wire, there may occasionally be a sharp edge. If you wet them in any way, there is a possibility that colour may run. Jewellery;-

Most of my designs use sterling silver and gemstones. Both my silver supplies, and gemstones are purchased from reputable, long established merchants. My designs tend to come in under the weight where hallmarking would apply. Lengths, and fastenings can sometimes be altered - please just ask. General;-

Non commission, ready to send items will be posted out by first class Royal Mail within 3 working days of ordering. Commission items will be sent out within a 2-3 week lead time. This will be discussed and confirmed on receipt of order. All items are handmade – this means that slight alterations can occur. This ensure every item is individual to you. If an item is found to be faulty, a full refund will be provided on return of the item, or receipt of photographic evidence of the fault. Non commission items can be returned for a full refund, should you change your mind, but return postage must be paid for by yourself. Commission orders cannot be returned/refunded unless found to be faulty. All commission orders are to be paid for in full before work will commence. Payment plans can be set in place.

I’m thinking of starting a blog. Unrelated to Athena Makes, but it might still be of interest.

Over the past few months, I’ve come to realise how much loneliness and grief affect people. From my own experiences since losing mum, and the life I had always known, and from talking to other people, who have found themselves alone after loss, divorce, moving etc.

I have come to the conclusion that too many people are feeling very much alone, but are afraid or embarrassed to admit it. One thing I personally have found, is that talking about it does help, and people are often more supportive than you expect. So, I’m seriously considering starting a blog to document , and talk about my situation, my wins when things start going well, and the times when things aren’t going as well as I would like. It might help me, and it might help someone else realise they are not alone in their feelings. So, my initial question is……..would anyone read it?

Well hello again!

It’s been a little while since I shared anything here, but I’ve finally found my way back to the embroidery hoop — and what better way to return than with a little bit of shimmer?

Meet my latest creation: a goldwork moth, worked in beautiful shades of rose gold and silver and finished in a deep black round frame.

There’s something rather special about goldwork. I love how the metallic threads catch the light and give the piece a completely different feel depending on where you’re standing.

And this little moth has definitely reminded me why I love creating. 🖤🦋

So, hello again! I’m looking forward to getting back to sharing more of my embroidery, jewellery, experiments, works in progress and probably the occasional “what on earth was I thinking?” moment along the way! 😂

Thanks for still being here — it’s lovely to be back. 💕

Should anyone be interested - this hoop will be appearing in the Paper Panda Emporium at the end of the month!

I’ve been missing for a while now, but now I’m getting back on track I thought I’d take the opportunity to re-introduce myself!

So, I’m Zoe – chief crafter (read, only crafter) of Athena Makes.
I have been crafting in many shapes and forms for most of my life. I have dabbled in many different forms of crafting until I eventually found my niche (or niches).

I started making jewellery many years ago for myself as a rebellion to the mass produced, samey items that I saw everywhere, then I started getting requests from friends and family for specific items, to match an outfit, or for a special occasion etc. Along the way I started dabbling in sewing – this was very strange to me as I hadn’t picked up a needle since my school days where a disastrous incident with a sewing machine, and a cushion designed like a plate of food (don’t ask!) put me off sewing completely.

I discovered that I loved to sew – and I could actually do it! I still run away screaming from a sewing machine, but there is something so very settling and therapeutic about picking up a needle, thread and a bit of fabric, and turning it into something that people enjoy.

I live in the centre of Derbyshire, where I am lucky enough to be surrounded by beautiful countryside. I have a huge love of nature, and many of my creations depict animals and birds. I have a particular love of woodland creatures!

I also have a huge love of mythology, and all things a little weird, so you might see a unicorn or a mermaid making an appearance too!

I am strictly supervised in my work by the love of my life, my pug Spock.

I’m particularly looking forward to getting back on track with the Paper Panda and Friends Emporiums. The next event runs from 25th to 28th September – I am working on new makes to launch at the event. I’d love to hear if there is anything in particular you would like me to work on – please comment with your requests/suggestions!

Hi everyone, long time, no speak again.

Some of you may already know, but my lovely mum passed away mid May. It was her funeral today.

As I'm sure you can imagine, a lot of things have changed for me over the last few weeks. There's so many different things that have to be dealt with, and so many things I've had to learn about. Probate, wills, all the legalities have been a major learning curve for me all while trying to grieve.

So Athena Makes has taken a back seat, and I don't know when or if I will get back to the way things were. I can't imagine closing altogether, but at the moment my creativity has completely vanished. I think I'm going to go back to basics. Think more about what I actually enjoy creating and what makes me happy, rather than constantly worrying and stressing about profit margins and how well things will sell. A reinvention of sorts.

So, the long and short of it is. I'm not back yet, but I will be back. Maybe doing something completely different. Watch this space..

Athena Makes is 10 years old today!

I cannot believe how quickly the last ten years have flown by. It feels just like yesterday that I took the plunge and opened my business.

It is somewhat bittersweet at the moment – as I’m sure you all know by now, my mum is having major health problems, and has only had 4 days at home since the beginning of April. She continues to decline, so I am spending most of my time travelling back and forwards to Derby hospital to see her.

All this has meant that my creativity has dried up, and I have not been making very much lately – it’s hard to explain how much I miss creating.

But……I couldn’t let this anniversary go by without celebrating, so I have temporarily re-opened my Etsy shop, and have set up a special anniversary discount that is only available to my lovely page followers. So head on over to www.etsy.com/uk/shop/athenamakeshandmade and use the code 10years at checkout to get 20% off absolutely everything. It’s open for a week from today.

I have every intention of getting back to work soon – I’m not giving up! So please, continue to bear with me a little while longer!
