We noticed an interesting phenomenon at Makeworth Coffee Roasters happening in the space: everyone naturally lined the edges of the room, facing inward toward the energy of the space.

It’s a design instinct that speaks to how we seek both comfort and awareness—a little personal boundary, but still connected to the activity.

This setup isn’t accidental. It reflects something called the prospect and refuge theory: we feel most at ease when we have a solid spot behind us and a clear view ahead.

Design that supports how people want to gather > design that tells them how to.
