Colorado patio season is showing off—and so is Little on Mountain.

Our bespoke patio expansion brings this neighborhood eatery into the life of the street, adding conversation, connection, and a welcoming place to linger along Mountain Avenue in Fort Collins. By extending the dining experience outdoors, the project activates the streetscape and makes the walk through the neighborhood a little more lively.

The Walnut House wasn’t about making the house bigger just for the sake of more space. It was about making the home live better.

The new addition opens up the kitchen and living spaces, creating room to gather, connect, and move through the house more naturally—all while carefully fitting the architecture between the mature trees that make this Old Town site so special.

Inside, rich walnut, warm light, and layered materials give the new spaces a sense of permanence—as if they’ve always belonged here.

A little more room. A lot more connection to the way this family lives.

An addition among the trees. The site at the Walnut House contained beautiful mature trees. During the design process, one goal was to maintain the trees and carefully design the foundations to avoid the root systems. We’re excited to share the completion of a historic home renovation in the heart of Old Town.

The project involved fully renovating and reimagining the interior while carefully expanding the home to better support modern living. A new addition at the rear created a modern kitchen and living room, and an ADU above the detached garage added flexible space for guests.

One of the biggest design priorities was preserving the character of the property and its mature landscape. The additions were carefully nestled between the existing trees, allowing the home to grow without losing the qualities that make the site so special.

Inside, rich walnut, layered materials, and warm mood lighting create an inviting atmosphere that feels both refined and comfortable. The result is a home that respects its historic setting while providing the space, function, and warmth needed for contemporary life. This year, VFLA celebrates 40 years in business.

Forty years of architecture. Forty years of relationships. Forty years of helping shape the communities we call home.

Since 1986, VFLA has had the privilege of working alongside clients, builders, consultants, city staff, historic preservation groups, planning boards, and community leaders to bring projects from idea to reality. And while drawings and floor plans are an important part of what we do, architecture has always been about much more than that.

It is about listening carefully, solving complex problems, navigating approvals, advocating for clients, coordinating teams, respecting context, preserving history, and creating places that serve people well for decades.

We are incredibly grateful to every client, partner, teammate, and community member who has trusted VFLA over the past 40 years. Your projects, ideas, challenges, and vision have shaped our story.

As we look ahead, we are excited to keep designing thoughtful, lasting places and continuing the relationships that make this work so meaningful.

Progress Pics! This thoughtful ranch expansion is rooted in craft, tuned to the land, and oriented to the Front Range, with a windmill marking arrival. This addition includes guestrooms and outdoor gathering spaces and will add to the vibrant nature of the property.

Expressed timber, refined detailing, and calibrated openings frame long, intentional sightlines, while fireplaces, patios, and outdoor rooms extend the architecture into the landscape.

As VFLA Architecture + Interiors celebrates 40 years of design, we’re rolling back the reel to revisit projects that helped shape the communities we call home.

Today’s look back: The Cortina – 224 Canyon Ave, Fort Collins.

Completed in 2004, this six-story residential building brought a distinctive Spanish-inspired architectural style to the edge of Old Town. Designed with 22 condominium units, the structure blends stone, stucco, and concrete to create a warm, textured façade that still stands out in the 80521 neighborhood today.

More than two decades later, The Cortina remains part of the evolving fabric of downtown Fort Collins—one of many projects in VFLA’s 40-year story of designing places where people live, work, and connect. See VFLA.com/Press for more history and projects.
