🌱 Not all mulches do the same job - and picking the wrong one for the job or the climate can quietly hold your garden back.
Compost works differently to most mulches. It’s already broken down, so it improves soil structure, moisture and biology faster than most things you can add to the surface.
🍂 Other organic mulches still feed the soil - just more slowly.
Wood chips, straw and shredded leaves all break down over time, feeding soil life and building structure. They’re not worse, just slower. In some cases - like around trees, for beneficial fungi or for w**d suppression - they’re actually the better choice.
Bear in mind that fresh wood chips can tie up nitrogen if mixed into the soil, so keep them on the surface rather than digging them in.
🐌 In wetter climates like mine, there’s another factor: slug shelter.
Loose, damp mulches like straw, leaves and wood chips (when damp and semi-rotted) can create ideal hiding spots. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use them - but it does mean you need to think about where and how thickly you apply them.
🪨 Gravel is different again.
It can protect the soil surface and suit dry-style planting, but as you can imagine, it doesn’t feed the soil at all. It’s a surface layer, not a soil-building one.
🌿 The takeaway is simple:
Compost improves soil fastest.
Other mulches feed it slowly.
The “best” mulch depends on your garden.
