Black Friday Closeout Sale!

Friends, I know you haven't heard from us for a while.

It took some time for us to process closing the store. And in process, I mean take care of everything essential and not much more.

Just like the stages of grief, we are closing the shop in stages. Now is the stage where we sell the remaining inventory.

Starting today, all remaining yarn on the site is 60%. The discount will be applied at checkout so don't panic if you don't see it when you add items to your cart. Shipping is a flat $5 dollars.

We have lots of great yarns left, great for holiday gifts or to make holiday gifts (you still have a little time but not much ๐Ÿ˜)

Thanks for your all your support and kind words. It's made this process easier.
Terri & Jazmyne

PS. We have not plans to reopen in another location. We closed because we ran out of funds. That fact is still true. If you would like to see a fuller explanation of the timeline of closing the shop, check out our Instagram page. There are several videos there.

Gathered.

We moved the rest of the small things out last night at 10 pm.

Glad I did it this way (although the Haynes are exhausted) because we didnโ€™t make our funding goal.

Few more things to do to make it official.

Thank you to everyone whom helped us move yesterday. I appreciate you to the bottom of my heart.

And weโ€™re keeping the best part of the shop: the community.

Gathering Yarns is Closing

Stitching friends, it has been an honor to serve you as your local yarn store but the time has come to close our doors.

Several factors played into our decision. Commercial leases are not cheap. Out of the year we've been open, only two of those months have we been able to make enough sales to cover the rent. We could renegotiate the lease, but that brings us to the next challenge.

We didn't have the foot traffic coming through the doors. The shopping center where the shop is located is very slow, even with the new ALDIs. Also, although we have lots of knitters and crocheters in Southern Maryland, many of them spend their days commuting outside of Southern Maryland. I have lived in Fort Washington for 24 years, and it has always been that way. Residents leave for work in the morning and don't come back until the evening.

Another factor in our closing is that we couldn't obtain business funding. Statistics show that Black-owned and particularly Black-women-owned businesses only get 16% of business capital even though they are the fastest growing group of business start-ups. I made several attempts to get business funding from loans to grants with no success.

I faced the decision to stay open and incur more debt or to close. I have loved the community we built in the shop but it is time for us to close. But we could use your help.

We have to close and quickly. I would like to get out before I have to pay another month's rent. We are currently two months behind on rent and need to pay it before we leave. We are doing two things to make that happen:

-Everythintg in the store is 50% off except for Queen Sheba Beauty and the hand-dyed yarn. You can shop the sale online as well
-We have set up a Ko-Fi account for people to give if they can't shop
ko-fi.com/gatheringyarns/goal?g=10

Any assistance you can give would be greatly appreciated.

We have set aside Sunday for people to come in to say goodbye to the shop (we are not saying goodbye to Terri, Jazmyne, and Brian because we'll still be around). We will also be moving out on Sunday. We'd love to see you.

Thank you in advance and it has been wonderful to help improve your stitching skills and provide you with a safe place.

Fondly,
Terri, Jazmyne, and Brian

July makes one year and one month since we opened our doors. Fun fact: Sales are very slow for many yarn stores in the summer. When we opened, we really didn't have any idea about how the summer would go. Now that we know, we decided it's not worth the payroll to open on Friday. Unfortunately, we've made sales less than 20 Fridays last year.

So we'll be open by appointment only on Fridays. If you have a yarn emergency, schedule a shopping appointment. We're pretty flexible since we only live 2 minutes away. We'll still host the Friday Lunch Online Gathering. Also, if you already know what you want to buy, use the online store and select in-store pickup.

As always, we thank you all for being so supportive as we figure out what works for us as a business.
