Another spirit recently carved from a 2 1/4” square basswood. Many of these carvings start out as a trial for noses, or lips, or eyes or carving tools, or paint/stains, etc. Always learn from each carving!

Yesterday was another fun day in carving class at the Eastern Woodland Carver’s Club in Converse Indiana. Design and one-on-one teaching by Rich Wetherbee, CCA. My finished carving is alongside the sample finished by the designer. The second photo is the roughout I started with. Details in photo descriptions.

In an upcoming class we will do a “study stick” of faces. It is a progression of the steps needed to carve a basic face. It’s great for repetitive practice, and to use as a study aid in the future. This is my (work in process) “practice” study stick for a class sample. Basswood 1-5/8” sq. x 12” long.

In the final carving class for 2025 we did a Northern Cardinal. The class design was in the “flat plane” style of carving. 4-1/2” tall. Prior to the class I made several variations with similar designs and sizes.

Pine cones were another beginner class project. Start with a 1” square x 6” long basswood block and cut away everything that doesn’t look like a pine cone! Most of the technique is “chip carving”. Takes a little practice, but overall a pretty simple project.

This little fellow was the project piece for one of our fall carving classes. I call him “Tree Man”. Not too original. Besides the fun basic design of the gnome face on one side and the tree on the other is you can make the tree shape whatever you want! The progression pieces show the tree pointing in different directions to the face. The original artist is unknown.
