⚠️TW: Jump scare⚠️
If you’re in the market for browning, mushy, smelly, molding, broken, poorly hydrated, prematurely cut flowers sold at full price — look no further than a grocery store!
Not only are they sitting on shelves at room temperature for days (maybe weeks) on end, but there are clear signs that the water quality (the very thing they NEED) is missing the mark. As you can see, it’s not a requirement for stems to even touch water. Yikes!
Grocery stores sell in consumer bunches, not bulk: 5 stem bunches opposed to 10; 12 stem bunches opposed 25; and so on. Besides, the flower quality is so low from where they source, these flowers don’t meet the standard to be sold to wholesalers or retail florists. Not to mention, poor processing techniques often lead to mold, broken, or missing stems.
Grocery stores cannot often guarantee ordering specific colors or flower varieties on your behalf — and if they say they do that’s a big red flag.
Flowers are a “loss leader” for chain stores. They do not profit from them - it’s to simply beautify the storefront and drive foot traffic. They’re sold so cheap, because big box stores will buy freight loads (the more you buy, the cheaper it gets per bunch), eventually ripping off the farmers and preventing you from shopping small and local.
When you purchase from a local florist, you’re not just another sale — you are supporting a dream, offering fair-trade wages to farmers, and receiving better quality products! You get what you pay for and we are SO grateful to this community for seeing our value in bringing the European bucket market experience to YOU🌷💌
