DIY Glowing Firefly Bottles

Materials
Bottles
4–8 mini clear plastic bottles with screw caps (2–4 oz)
White bottle caps (or paint existing caps white)
Glow Lights
Mini glow sticks (4-inch or bracelet-size)

Green

Yellow
Orange
Pink (optional)
Antennae
Black pipe cleaners
Yellow pipe cleaners (optional)
Scissors

Small self-adhesive googly eyes (8–10 mm)
Black permanent marker (optional)

Hot glue gun
Hot glue sticks
Craft knife or awl (adult use only)

Step 1: Prepare the Bottles

Wash each plastic bottle thoroughly.

Remove any labels and adhesive residue.

Allow them to dry completely inside and out.

Wipe the outside with rubbing alcohol so glue sticks securely.

Step 2: Make Holes in the Caps

Using a craft knife, heated awl, or small drill bit (adult supervision required), carefully create two small holes near the center of each bottle cap.

The holes should be just large enough for pipe cleaners to pass through snugly.

Step 3: Create the Antennae

Cut two 5–6 inch pieces of pipe cleaner for each bottle.

Thread both ends through the holes from underneath the cap.

Twist them together inside the cap to lock them securely.

Curl the exposed ends into decorative spirals using your fingers or a pencil.

Step 4: Attach the Eyes

Glue two googly eyes onto the front of each bottle cap.

Leave a small gap between the eyes.

If desired, draw a tiny smile beneath the eyes using a fine-tip permanent marker.

Step 5: Activate the Glow Stick

Bend the glow stick several times until it cracks internally.

Shake it gently for about 15 seconds until the glow becomes bright and even.

Pencil
Butterfly wing template (optional)

Small wooden skewer or pencil (for curling antennae)
Optional: Glitter glue, markers, rhinestones, or stickers
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Colored Paper

Choose two or three colors that contrast well, such as:

Yellow + Pink
Purple + Lime Green
Orange + Yellow
Blue + White

Cut the paper into rectangles approximately 6 × 8 inches (15 × 20 cm) for medium butterflies.

For a layered effect, cut a second rectangle about ½ inch (1 cm) smaller than the first.

Step 2: Create the Wing Shapes

Fold each rectangle in half.

Draw half of a butterfly wing along the folded edge.

Round the outer edges and slightly taper the center where the body will be.

Twist or glue it securely.

This forms the butterfly's body and holds the wings together.

Step 5: Attach the Second Layer

Place the smaller accordion-folded butterfly directly on top of the larger one.

Align both centers carefully.

Glue or wrap another thin strip around the middle to secure both layers together.

Fan the folds evenly until both sides are symmetrical.
