Crafty Creations by Jenn Welcome to Crafty Creations by Jenn!

I'm passionate about crafting, with a special love for crocheting, which has been a cherished hobby of mine for the past few years.

Meet this little cottage cat. 🌿🧶

He likes slow mornings, warm tea and a sunny windowsill.

He’s has a navy hood and a super soft patchy rust-and-cream coat, and he has sparkly green-ringed eyes. He’s about 10” tall, and his limbs bend so he can curl up wherever he likes (swipe to see him move!).

Handmade in soft blanket yarn, one stitch at a time. 🤍 Want one for your own cozy corner?

I didn’t do this guy justice when I did the first video because it was difficult to hold the camera with my handle bandaged up. So hopefully this video shows a little bit more of how cute he is.

Let me know if you think he’d be perfect for someone you know!

Quick crochet cover for my bandage! It’s only about an inch wide and just wraps right over the bandage to obscure it a little and make it look less boring and dingy. 😆

I used variegated yarn, so the colors change as it wraps around.

What do you think? Better than looking at the bandage? 😂

Where there’s a will, there’s apparently a way to crochet. 😂🧶

Left-handed crochet? I tried.

Without my right thumb to help control the yarn and project? Nope. I just could NOT make it work.

But my doctor has now cleared me to use the fingers on my right hand however I want, provided my thumb stays completely out of it.

So… I adapted.

I’m crocheting using my fingers, protecting my bandage with a cover, and keeping that thumb completely uninvolved. Am I fast? Absolutely not. 😂 But I’m getting faster, and more importantly, I’m crocheting again.
I’m sharing the way I’m doing it because I know there are other crocheters dealing with CMC pain or recovering from surgery who may be wondering whether they can still crochet.

This isn’t a “you should do this too” post. Your surgeon’s instructions come first. I just want you to know that when you’re cleared to use your fingers, you may be able to adapt your technique instead of waiting until your thumb is completely back to normal.

I’m going to try to crochet a simple wrap to go around my temporary splint which will likely be changing on a weekly basis so a wrap cover seems to be the most flexible option. Originally I was going to make a fingerless glove of sorts but the more I thought about it, the less likely that was going to be flexible enough to adapt to the different dimensions of whatever they put on me for the next six weeks. But I hate these wraps that I can’t wash and they get dinging working so hopefully what I came up with will work nicely.

Well y’all… Take Two is behaving so far! 😂🙌

Had my first checkup and everything looks to be healing pretty well. One incision is a little angry, but not infected. Then again, we’ve entered this poor thumb twice this month, so I feel like it’s entitled to have an attitude.

Stitches will probably come out next week, and he wants to check that incision again just to keep an eye on it.

I still have to keep the thumb immobilized for six weeks, BUT he’s getting me into a splint I can get wet in for the cruise. THANK GOODNESS. 🛳️

And then came the question we all knew I was going to ask…

Can I crochet? 🧶😂

YES! I can crochet with my fingers, move my wrist, and do whatever feels comfortable. I just cannot use that thumb. At all.

When we get back from the cruise, I start therapy and can finally begin working on moving the thumb.

So, after the roller coaster that was Take One… I am perfectly happy with an uneventful update. 💜

Apparently alligators CAN be cuddly. 🐊💚

This chunky guy is extra special because he brought home a blue ribbon at the Clay County Fair! 🏆 And now he’s ready to find his new home.

Handmade by Crafty Creations by Jenn and approximately 16” from nose to tail.

$13.47 at Goodwill.

Three bland and unfinished blankets.

But I didn’t buy them for the blankets. 😉

I bought them for the yarn.

While my right hand keeps me from crocheting, I’m spending TV time frogging, winding and getting all this beautiful yarn ready for its second life.

Waste yarn? Not on my watch. 😂🧶♻️

What should it become?

Fellow vendors…I need some advice before I buy yet another display thing. 😂

Has anyone used one of these rods that clamps onto the table?

When I have my canopy, hanging things isn’t really a problem because I can use the canopy itself. It’s the markets where I’m set up without the canopy that I’m trying to solve.

And then there’s the wind. 💨 I need something that will actually stay where I put it when a gust comes through.
So, if you’ve used one of these outdoors, how did it do? Did it stay sturdy? Sway all over the place? Need extra clamps or weights?

Tell me before Amazon gets more of my money. 😂
Pictures and other solutions welcome!

Y’all know I love to upcycle, and sometimes I’m not thrifting the crochet piece. I’m thrifting the YARN. 🧶♻️

Finished crochet pieces can be a great source of inexpensive yarn, including colors that aren’t always easy to find. And honestly? Frogging while watching TV is pretty easy work. Especially given my current state of not being able to crochet until my hand heals from CMC arthroplasty.

I’ve even got my mom removing seams from thrifted clothing while she watches TV so I can frog them more easily. 😂 Those pieces can be a great source for nice cotton yarn.

But chenille? That’s where I’m especially picky.

Good chenille will usually frog pretty well. It might snag. It might break. It might make me fuss with it occasionally.

But good chenille is worth the trouble.

Cheap chenille?

Leave. It. There. 😂

If you’re buying a finished piece intending to reclaim the yarn, a bargain is only a bargain if the yarn is actually worth saving.
