Jarring up some sourwood honey!

The aroma is so strong in this batch, so I really like the first view jars before I get nose blind to it.

More 2 lb jars going up in the kiosk.

I moved to bucket feeders a couple years back. Like them a lot, and I can use different plugs with varying number of holes to slow or speed up the intake of the syrup.

I added a short section of hose to the nozzle this week and really like the addition.

But I’m ready to start filling the buckets out of the apiary because the bees find the truck rapidly and start crowding the nozzle and get into the buckets.

Back by popular demand: Surry County Sourwood!

Sourwood honey is in stock in the kiosk.

Sourwood honey is prized for its superior flavor and smooth texture. It’s a buttery smooth honey with a hint of spice. Sourwood honey that is nearly water clear is especially desired for its purity. This year’s crop is very light, and appears almost clear on your buttered biscuits!

Derived from the nectar of the sourwood tree, which grows in the Appalachias. To get sourwood,we trailer 16 hives and take them to Surry County from Mid June to Mid July. During this time, we travel frequently to manage the colonies.

Due to rising costs in production, the price this year is $23 per 1 pound jar. I will be making 2 pound jars available later for $45.

It won't be long now!

The bees have been busy making sourwood honey! One of the most prized honeys in the word, this comes from the blooms of the sourwood tree, native to the Appalachian mountains, but also present here in Piedmont. This honey is buttery smooth, fragrant, and comes with a slight spicy flavor. We will get the bees back this coming weekend and will announce when the honey is available in the kiosk.

Looking good for our sourwood honey harvest. I’m tracking the weight gain for two colonies this year and comparing to the past 2 years. They gained more and are continuing to gain weight for longer. We should have the sourwood honey available by the end of a July.

The bees are ready, now we hope the sourwood comes through!

We harvested more honey yesterday. We will have it in jars by the weekend. We left some honey frames for the bees to finish, so one more local harvest to come.

We are not going to get nearly as much honey this year as we wanted. It was a good start but the main flow was short lived.

We will take a trailer of hives up to Surry County to try for sourwood in June.
