📜 ON THIS DAY IN 1862: The Battle of Pocotaligo, South Carolina

On October 22, 1862, Union forces attempted to destroy a vital railroad connecting Charleston and Savannah. Confederate troops successfully defended the area, forcing the Union soldiers to withdraw.

The palmetto tree was a powerful symbol of South Carolina pride, appearing on Confederate flags, military buttons, and personal belongings.

🔎 FEATURED ARTIFACT | SOUTH CAROLINA RELIC

This fascinating relic, recovered from a South Carolina camp, appears to have been fashioned from melted bullets and hand-etched with a palmetto tree. Possibly used as a tent or gravesite marker, its true purpose remains a mystery!

📜 On This Day in the Civil War — October 15, 1863
⚓ A Submarine Disaster Beneath Charleston Harbor!

On October 15, 1863, the Confederate submarine H. L. Hunley sank during a test dive in Charleston Harbor, killing all eight men aboard—including its namesake, inventor Horace Lawson Hunley. But here’s the remarkable part: The Confederates recovered the submarine and tried again. Just four months later, the Hunley made history by becoming the first submarine to sink an enemy warship in combat, destroying the USS Housatonic.
Unfortunately, the submarine never returned from that mission. Its wreck wasn’t recovered until 2000!

ON THIS DAY IN THE CIVIL WAR — SEPTEMBER 28, 1864

Under cover of darkness on September 28, Maj. Gen. Benjamin Butler’s Army of the James began crossing the James River, preparing to strike the Confederate defenses protecting Richmond. By dawn the next morning, the operation would explode into the battles of New Market Heights and Fort Harrison.

A direct connection to today’s history: Union Drummer Boy currently has an original Civil War telegram/order signed by Maj. Gen. Benjamin F. Butler available on our website.

It’s always remarkable when an original artifact allows us to connect the history we read about with the actual men who helped make it.

ON THIS DAY IN THE CIVIL WAR — SEPTEMBER 22, 1862

Five days after Antietam, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. It declared that enslaved people in states or portions of states still in rebellion on January 1, 1863, would be free. Lincoln had been waiting for a Union military success before making the announcement, and Antietam provided the opportunity. The final Emancipation Proclamation followed 100 days later.

The original period image of Lincoln featured here offers a tangible connection to this pivotal moment in American history. It is available from Union Drummer Boy but has not yet been listed online. Message us now for details or to make it yours.
