Throwing it back to the late 1990s and this pediatric playroom designed for Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

At a time when many healthcare environments still felt highly institutional, this space was designed to transport young patients somewhere entirely different. Throughout the pediatric unit, the ceiling told a story—transitioning from sunrise to sunset as patients moved through the space. In the playroom, a cove-lit night sky came alive with fiber optic lights that reflected constellations visible in the Shenandoah Valley at different times of the year. 🌌

Playful animal silhouettes, interactive activities, and destination-style architectural features helped create an environment centered on imagination, discovery, and comfort rather than the clinical nature of a hospital.

It's a reminder that healthcare design has always been about more than function. Sometimes the most meaningful spaces are the ones that spark wonder, provide a distraction, and let kids simply be kids.

Throwing it back to a time when "high-tech" meant a CRT monitor the size of a small refrigerator, a stack of floppy disks, and an ACAD digitizer tablet taking up half the desk.

Back in the mid-'90s, this was the cutting edge of computer-aided drafting. No cloud storage. No dual monitors. No endless browser tabs. Just designers, determination, and the occasional panic of wondering which floppy disk actually held the latest version.

One thing that hasn't changed? KSA's commitment to embracing new technology. From digitizer tablets and floppy disks to BIM, cloud collaboration, and today's advanced design tools, we've always believed in staying current so we can deliver the best solutions for our clients.

The technology may have changed, but the goal remains the same: turning great ideas into great design.

Throwing it back to the mid-2000s, when office design was often defined by an endless sea of gray cubicles and systems furniture as far as the eye could see.

This workplace decided to have a little more fun. Bold red accents cut through the monotony, helping define pathways, support wayfinding, and inject energy into the space. And instead of pretending the columns weren't there, the design leaned into them—transforming them into architectural features that added rhythm, character, and a distinct identity throughout the office.

A reminder that even in the heyday of the cubicle, great design found ways to surprise, delight, and make the workday a little more interesting.

CREATE the summer experience ☀️

This month's marquee is all about embracing new opportunities, fresh perspectives, and meaningful experiences.

We're excited to welcome Kyia to the team this summer and look forward to the creativity, curiosity, and energy she'll bring to our studio. As a student at Radford University, she's already building a strong foundation in design, and we're excited to be part of her journey this summer. Stay tuned to learn more about Kyia in an upcoming blog post!

Here's to a summer of growth, discovery, and creating memorable experiences together.

Throwing it back to the early days of “The Games” at the VCU Student Commons.

Originally opened in 1984 on the main floor of the Commons, the space later moved to the lower level and was reintroduced as Break Point in 1993—with KSA leading the interior design transformation into the student hangout many alumni still remember today.

A little nostalgia for the neon lights, arcade sounds, late-night pool games, and the kind of spaces that made campus life memorable.
