Muirwood

Muirwood Trendsetting Designs for the Home In 2015, my husband Scott and I started a small housewares company called Muirwood (Reclamations).

At that time, we were a young military family settling down to have our first child. Seeking a supplemental income, Scott began handcrafting furniture from reclaimed wood and working with railroad spikes to offer a farmhouse and industrial look to our earliest designs. Over the years we have participated in local artisan shows, Chicago’s One of a Kind Show at Merchandise Mart, launched our Railroa

d Spike Bottle Opener with the Grommet.com, and have worked with more than 70 retail businesses across the United States and Canada. We’ve been featured in local publications, BRIDES, Apartment Therapy, and Business Insider. What started as a supplemental side gig has blossomed into a full-fledged business. In 2018, Scott separated from the military and made the move to civilian life. With him pursuing a professional career, I took the business by the reins and haven’t turned back. In 2020, we began to incorporate curated items to the store. With that change, we rebranded as Muirwood. As the day-to-day operator, I find joy in thoughtfully curating the shop. Muirwood focuses on unique housewares that start conversations and offers trendsetting designs + goods for your home.

When someone asks “where’d you get that”, I want you to say “at Muirwood”.

Our Story

Muirwood's founders, Scott & Kristin Fischer, met in Key West, Florida while Scott was stationed in the United States Coast Guard. The two were on the search for a unique dining table, but kept turning up empty handed. It’s here where Kristin took the design to herself and Scott the building. A few short weeks later, they had a unique pub style table to dine at. However, it wasn’t until Scott was re-stationed to Chicago the two officially launched the business, but this was definitely the conception.

Originally from Chicago, the two enjoyed the transition back to the Midwest. Though, when winter hit, they found themselves looking for a new hobby. Scott took to building again, but this time found a bucket of old, rusty railroad spikes. Scott would find himself in the garage on days between shifts and began building more tables. One night, he reached for an old spike to pop the top of a beer. This is when he realized there had to be a better way to open his beer with a railroad spike. Soon after, he got to cutting and drilling to create the duo's very first Railroad Spike Bottle Opener.

In April 2015, the two met with Scott’s Aunt, the owner of a culinary store in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, over Easter dinner and she offered to carry the opener. From there it felt like the possibilities were endless. In May 2016, Kristin left her Human Resources position to focus on building the business.

During the summer of 2018, Scott officially ended his career with the United States Coast Guard and began working as a civilian, leaving the majority of business responsibility to Kristin (the Jill-of-all-trades for day-to-day operations)! She answers emails, ships your orders, and pours all of the concrete!
