One of the best parts of working with the same clients twice is that you already know how they live. The tricky part is resisting the urge to give them the same house twice.

We designed this family’s home in the Midwest, so when they asked us to follow them south to Naples, we already knew a lot. What they gravitated toward. How they entertained. Where everyone tended to pile up. What made a house feel like theirs.

This time, we took all of that and gave it a Florida address. The woods got paler, the fabrics breezier, the blues bluer, and everything loosened up a little.

I’ve never been very good at walking into a hardware store and leaving with only what was on my list. Most people are there for nails, paint, or plumbing supplies. I’m usually distracted by the things that have nothing to do with why I walked in.

On a trip to a local hardware store in Palm Beach, I found a series of small regional prints that ended up in this bar. They weren’t part of the original plan, but once they were there, the room felt more lived in, as though they had always belonged.

Thank you to Angela Tafoya and Vogue for including me in a story about one of my favorite places to find inspiration.

Homes rarely stay the same for long.

One of the things we’ve noticed over the years is that clients rarely come to us asking for a home office. More often, they come to us because something has changed.

The kids are older. They’re working from home more often. A spare room suddenly has a new purpose, or someone finally has space for the business they’ve been dreaming about. Sometimes it’s as simple as wanting a room with a door that closes.

We love helping clients figure out what the next version of their home looks like. The best houses aren’t finished the day you move in. They continue to evolve alongside the people who live there, and these offices are all a little different because no two families evolve in quite the same way.

Apparently, my version of traveling light still includes a car full of baskets, blankets, and bowls. That is more or less how Onnie came to be.

For years, people have asked where I find the pieces in our projects and in my own home. Soon, I’ll finally have somewhere to send them, with a collection that brings together things we’ve discovered, developed with artisans, and designed in the studio just for Onnie.

We spend so much time thinking about what fills a room that it’s easy to overlook what surrounds us.

At The Evergreen House, the walls became part of the experience. Some are wrapped in texture, others in wood or stone, and each brings something different to the rooms around them.

They work with the architecture, soften the light, and give your hand somewhere to land as you move through the house. It’s easy to overlook those details until you imagine the rooms without them.

I’ve never thought luxury was about having the biggest room or the most impressive object in it. It’s the piece you pack first when you move, or the one everyone picks up before asking where you found it.

That’s what I wanted Onnie to become. A place to gather the objects we’ve discovered over the years, the work of makers we’ve admired, and pieces developed hand in hand with artisans or designed in the studio just for Onnie. Each one chosen the way we choose everything at ANDREA GOLDMAN: by the way it makes a home feel.

Onnie launches this September. If you’d like to be first to see what we’ve been collecting, sign up through the link in Onnie’s profile.

An outdoor kitchen should make it easier to be together, not give someone another place to disappear.

That’s why we think about the island and sink early. One creates a natural gathering point, while the other keeps the cook connected to the conversation instead of tucked away inside.

At this Naples home, we wanted the outdoor kitchen to work just as well for a quiet dinner as it would for a house full of guests. The island naturally became the center of it all, making it easy to prep, serve, and stay part of whatever was happening around it.

Thanks, and Homes & Gardens.

Some of the best finds happen because you went looking. Others because you took the long way home.

That’s really what Onnie is. A collection of pieces we’ve discovered, made, and designed over time, each one chosen for the way it makes a home feel.

Follow along over at Onnie.
