Fresh off the Memorial Day holiday I had arranged for a somewhat large cabinet delivery to my clients townhouse this morning. And apparently also the County had a work order to dig up the narrow lane and fix a sinkhole. No information or flyers to the residents. And RIGHT in front of the townhouse. Go figure. So at 10:30am I had to fit the Chesapeake Kitchen Wholesalers delivery truck on the lane and ask the County workers if they could move the massive digger truck/dump truck and two County vans so we could get the delivery truck a little bit closer to unload my cabinet order!! It pays to be polite and ask nicely!! What an INSANE start to this week!

Happy Makeover Monday!
Deciding on a renovation allows my clients to make a space ‘theirs’ instead of working and living in someone else’s idea of a space. In this case my clients have a second floor full bath that services three bedrooms. They have raised a family and used this bathroom for a couple of decades but it was time for an upgrade. Could I use the existing footprint but upgrade and re-organize the space to function better/look better, and have more storage?? So I went to work!
I have worked with these clients on other projects so we quickly came up with a plan. Window and door were to stay. Pretty much everything else came out. Which allowed for exposed plumbing pipes to be reworked down under the floor. I reduced the size of the tub wall which allowed much more natural light into the space. An inefficient linen closet was removed and I designed a new closet with functioning drawers and doors and even room for a hamper! The new tub is cast iron. I replaced the outdated shower/tub fixtures with a rain pan AND a handheld unit. Grab bars for safety. The vanity has SO much storage and multiple drawers that soft close! New marble floor tile coordinates with the marble remnant we selected for the countertop with a custom backsplash and the threshold to the room coordinates as well. A new shower niche finished off the custom look (and function) and has marble shelves for product. I finished off the solutions and selections with a new comfort height toilet. My clients are loving the new look but more importantly the safety features and function of their full bath!

Okay professionals!!!! What the heck messed up dishwasher connection is this????????? Not sure what code it adheres to but I am just glad we found it and can upgrade according to all plumbing codes!!

This Week’s Makeover!
Remember back in the 90’s entertainment centers were huge to accommodate large TV’s that sat on the base!! No one wants them anymore as technology has changed to slim line wall mounted smart TV’s. So my job is to balance technology with function and aesthetic.
In this case I was hired to ‘upgrade and update’ a comfortable family room. So keeping the furnishings in place (new lounge chair is coming to replace fireplace lounge chair) I was tasked with designing solutions that would con-temporize the look and function of the room!
I came up with some solutions!
The adjacent kitchen had a phenomenal red hood that set the tone for the space. I suggested painting the entertainment center wall also red for a great focal wall that coordinated with the kitchen in an updated way. The brick fireplace also had the red tones in the brick. Since the entertainment wall WAS crowded with furnishings a new lower tv base cabinet became the anchor of the wall and was a contemporary upgrade. The TV was wall mounted and that allowed me to hang two important prints in black and white on either side of the smart tv. I moved the bar unit over to the right side beside the fireplace and hung other art above for a curated look. The black and white framed family photos that had been spread out on either side of the fireplace I curated into one install on the left side to balance the space out. So now both sides of the fireplace have curated art and prints that balance each side out in scale. We are waiting for a new chair but it will fit into the space that was designed for it!! My client is so pleased with how I looked at her space, listened, and then contemporized and curated her art to make the family room friendly and sophisticated! Listening is EVERYTHING!

Had the most amazing evening!!! Gramophone Design/Build on York Road hosted a very special design night! Tony Ferrante of Hill Residential, Robert Haywood of Annapolis Home Magazine and Andrew Davis hosted us all to Lutron lighting’s newest LED system. So the event paired curated environments with culinary pairings.
Different food courses with coordinated lighting. Sounds insane but it was MAGICAL!!!! And the showroom is incredible!!

Happy Makeover Monday!
I really wish old houses could talk!! In this case the main and only second floor bathroom had seen better days, and the shower surround and pan had sprung some leaks. How could I bring the full bath not only up to date but give a spa like feel to the space for my client. First off, we made a list of wants and needs. A better shower with space for product/nice tiles/a bench if I could fit one, with the existing shower space a bench would not fit. However, during demo a surprise appeared!!
The dividing wall between the shower and the window was not a solid wall!! It was a chase from the first to second floor but was small. Which allowed me to cut back into the wall and make a bench space in the shower!! What an incredible opportunity! So I redesigned the shower with a great bench and a shower locker for product. A rain pan AND a hand held gave the shower optimum water features. All new tile upscaled the shower space and I used the shower curb granite to top the bench to match the vanity top. Demolition is so rewarding sometimes and allowed my contractor and I to do some quick thinking and utilize every inch for the benefit of my client!
If only the house could have told us this secret in advance of demolition!!
