Pine needles are the ones that get people.
Leaves you can see from the ground. Needles pack down flat and quiet, and by the time water is running over the front lip of your gutter, there is already a mat sitting in there holding moisture against the metal all season.
This one had a solid bed of them. You can see the downspout opening in the second photo, which is the whole point. Clear gutter, clear outlet, water going where it is supposed to go instead of down the side of the house and into the foundation.
If you have pines or spruce anywhere near the roof line here in Denver, once a year usually is not enough. We tell most homeowners spring and fall, and we will say so honestly if yours does not need it yet.
How often should you clean gutters in Colorado? For most Denver metro homes, twice a year. For homes under heavy pine cover in the foothills, closer to three.
