Burgundy cabinets in a small kitchen? Say less!

Before I ever thought about buying my building, I stumbled across a French boutique hotel with burgundy cabinets. I immediately saved it and thought, “If I ever have an Airbnb, I’m doing a burgundy kitchen.”

Fast forward a year or two, and here we are. Burgundy cabinets with a burgundy marble backsplash.

I never once worried that the color would make this small kitchen feel dark. I think we’ve all collected these preconceived notions and design rules over the years. One of them being, “If your space is small, stay away from dark colors. They’ll make it feel even smaller.”

But what if we stopped trying to make every small space feel bigger?

How about we make it cozy, layered and memorable instead? 🤷🏽‍♀️

Today I drop my middle son off at college.

This summer flew by, and I spent my free time painting leaves and petals on my studio walls. I’m learning to fully embrace the life of a creative. I have a creative job, but I take on creative side hobbies to keep my mind from thinking too much about my creative job. Funny how that works. And yet, the most important role I’ve ever taken on is slowly evolving into a new chapter.

Motherhood. Ever evolving. Ever changing. You don’t stay in one season for long, even when it feels like it will never change. The chaos, the noise, the smells, the fights, the friends, the sports. Just making sure that at the end of the day they’re ready to take on the world without you.

Then one day, they are.

You cry tears of pride and joy, but also tears because you know it will never be the same again. You realize all those ordinary moments that once felt endless were actually the days you were building a whole human.

And so it changes, and it evolves. Motherhood does too. And somehow, so do the spaces I call my own.

A little bit of what I’ve been up to this summer. Hand painting a mural/wallpaper design in the studio! Just have a whole other side to go. 😅

One thing about me… I’m going to find a way to make tile more interesting. 😄

Loved creating this pattern for a custom steam shower. It’s subtle, fun, and gives the space that little something extra. 🤍

Let’s talk countertops for a second. Most of you know I’m a natural stone girl through and through. There’s been so much fear mongering around natural stone lately and this huge narrative that quartz is the safer choice because it’s more durable 😒. But truthfully, nothing is indestructible. Every material comes with tradeoffs. That said, if maintenance isn’t your thing, I completely understand choosing something lower maintenance. The goal isn’t perfection, it’s choosing materials that fit your life and still make you feel something.

For example, in this kitchen we decided to use a porcelain countertop for durability and because this is a busy family home. We searched for one that closely resembled marble because we still wanted that movement and richness. We wanted a little drama 💫 and this one fit the bill perfectly.

Moral of the story, choose materials that support the way you live, not just what the internet tells you is “best.” There’s room for beauty and practicality.
