Even after 40+ years of upholstering, we still find new things every now and then. Our customer thought that they knew the history and maker of this chair, but when we were deconstructing it, we found an interesting mark mostly covered by fabric (slide 3). After some intensive googling, we discovered that the horseshoe branding was used by the Monterey Furniture Company out of southern California, in business from 1930 until the mid-1940s. Their furniture was popular among clients such as Walt Dianey and Clark Gable, and we saw similar pieces selling for anywhere from $3000-$7500. Our customer was stunned to hear this and we were so glad to have had the opportunity to restore it. Do you have an interesting piece of history hiding in your attic? We love getting the opportunity to work on beautiful, unique antique pieces like this one. According to the owner, it had at some point belonged to author Willa Cather (1873-1947). The original jute webbing that supported the springs in the seat had deteriorated, causing the seat to collapse. We removed the old webbing, retied the springs, and replaced the old jute with durable nylon webbing, all without disturbing the beautiful upholstery. Now with a reinforced seat, this chair can provide comfort and inspiration to artists for years to come.

We can do housecalls for small jobs like this and can pick up/drop off larger jobs. Antiques are our specialty!

Reupholstering a piece in plaid fabric takes skill and knowledge to make all of the lines match. Fortunately, 40+ years of experience means these came out beautifully. Plaid is absolutely not our favorite, however, and there may have been considerable grumbling in the shop while these were being done 😂
