Some of the best projects start with a home that no longer feels like it fits the people living in it.

This Tudor renovation was for a blended family of eight, and the original layout simply could not support the way they lived. The kitchen was too tight, the basement ceilings were incredibly low, and there was not enough space for the family or their friends to gather.

We converted the garage into a new kitchen, dug out the lower level to create usable ceiling height, and transformed spaces that once felt dark and cramped into areas the family genuinely enjoys spending time in.

One of my favorite parts of renovation work is seeing a home finally begin to work for the people inside it.

One of the hardest conversations in design is not actually about style. It is about expectations.

Sometimes clients want the longevity, craftsmanship, and quality level of a very high-end product while hoping the budget will somehow reflect something entirely different. And I understand why. Everyone wants to make smart financial decisions.

But good materials, thoughtful construction, performance fabrics, custom details, and lasting quality all cost what they cost.

I often use the analogy that you cannot expect a Mercedes experience with a Toyota budget. That does not mean there are not thoughtful ways to prioritize or compromise within a project, because there absolutely are. It just means there has to be clarity about what matters most long term.

Personally, I will almost always lean toward longevity and quality over something that simply looks good for a short period of time.

A beautiful home should feel livable to the homeowners with their lifestyle in mind.

One of the biggest misconceptions I see is the idea that luxury means grand or overly formal. If a space is elegant, people could feel nervous sitting in it, using it, or truly living in it.

To me, the best homes are the ones that can hold both beauty and real life at the same time. Exquisite high-style performance fabrics, durable materials, thoughtful layouts, spaces designed for entertaining, grandchildren, pets, quiet mornings, busy holidays, and all the in-between moments that actually happen inside a home.

I never want clients to feel like they are living around their home instead of comfortably within it.

That balance among grace, comfort, durability, and functionality is often where the best design decisions are made.

A theater room is very different from simply having a large television in a basement.

When we worked on the lower level of this project, one of the conversations was about how immersive the homeowners wanted the experience to feel. Some people want a comfortable space to gather and watch movies casually, while others want something that feels much more like a true theater experience with blackout conditions, layered sound, larger-scale technology, and complete separation from the rest of the home.

The interesting part is that neither approach is wrong. It really comes down to how the family wants to live and use the space.
For this home, the lower level needed to support a large blended family with six children, frequent visitors, movie nights, entertaining, and flexible hangout areas that could evolve as the kids grew up. The goal was less about creating a formal theater and more about creating a space everyone genuinely wanted to spend time in.

A timeless home does not mean a home that feels frozen in time.

With this Reeds Lake Tudor Revival project, the goal was to create something that felt authentic to the architecture and natural to East Grand Rapids, while still functioning beautifully for modern life. The homeowners wanted a space that felt stately, elegant, and grounded in character, yet comfortable enough to live in every day.

That balance shows up in the details. The custom ceiling treatments, the flow of the spaces, the materials, and the lighting. Everything was designed to feel intentional and lasting rather than tied to a trend that would feel dated in a few years.

One of my favorite things about this project is that it feels like it belongs exactly where it is. Not overly modernized, not trying too hard, just a home designed with longevity in mind.

A lot of people don’t realize how much mental energy their home is taking until they hit a breaking point. Do we move to find one that fits and functions better, or make adjustments to this one to work better for us?

It can show up in small ways.

Having to think too much about where things go, working around a layout that doesn’t quite make sense, or constantly adjusting how you use a space just to make it function.

Over time, that adds up.

One of the goals in our work is to create homes that don’t require that kind of effort. Spaces that feel intuitive, where things are where you expect them to be, and the layout supports how you move through your routines.

When that’s in place, the home feels calmer without needing anything extra.

Sometimes the goal is for a home to just feel easier to be in. Functional, graceful, easy, and beautiful.

What to change to achieve this is not always something you can point to right away. Making the spaces loosely interconnected while giving each element its own identity allows for a beautiful flow throughout the home.

Things feel easier, each space beautiful, yet the surroundings fit and function on their own.

When homes flow from one space to the next with ease and grace, it works. Every area and space wants touches that are its own while maintaining a connection and flow that carries throughout.

A lot of clients come to us with a pretty clear idea of what they think they need.

Sometimes it’s a kitchen update, new furniture, or a specific change they’ve been thinking about for a while. And those instincts are usually coming from living with things they don’t love or feel aren't working.

But once we start talking through how they use their home and how they wish it would look, the conversation often shifts a bit. What seemed like the main issue is sometimes just part of a bigger picture.

That’s where the process becomes really helpful. It gives us the space to step back, look at how everything is working together, and make sure the solution actually supports their life.

This Riverview condo was designed to feel easy to live in, entertain, and enjoy every day.

The goal was to increase storage throughout, improve functionality, and make it more beautiful and enjoyable for the homeowners. As it’s a condo, the layout really couldn’t be changed, but we could improve the quadrants and adjacencies to make it feel like we could. The materials, finishes, and lighting also made a big difference. A little more luxury and a lot more function go a long way.

We focused on creating a space that feels beautiful while being comfortable, functional, and cohesive. The clients desired a place that was just as amazing for a quiet night in as it is when hosting.

In the end, it’s a home that fits the rhythm of everyday life, which is what matters most.

Most people don’t wake up one day and decide to renovate their home. It usually builds over time.

A kitchen that feels a little harder to move through than it did, that angst of “I wish we had more storage”, a space that never quite gets used the way you thought it would, or small frustrations that start to add up until you notice them more than you used to.

At some point, it shifts from something you can live with to something you would actually like to change. They don’t feel that sense of ease like when you walk into a beautifully organized space that is your own.

That’s often when we first hear from clients. Not because everything is wrong, but because things could feel easier, more comfortable, or better suited to how they live now.
