Recently, an electrician told me, “Have the general contractor call me when you have things figured out.”
I said, “I am the general contractor.”
I’m a licensed GC, designer, project manager, business owner and investor. I manage schedules, budgets, ordering, client communication, design decisions and the professionals who make each project possible.
No, I’m not a framer, drywaller, tile setter or finish carpenter. I hire talented people who know their trades deeply—and respecting their expertise does not diminish mine.
Women in construction are often expected to prove themselves in ways men simply aren’t. The skills that hold an entire project together—leadership, finance, design, communication, organization and accountability—are construction skills, too.
There is room to respect craftsmanship and women’s leadership at the same time.
So, to every woman working in construction I’d love to hear your experiences. Let’s start the conversation.
