Fable Flora Farm

Fable Flora Farm Every story is made of big events and small, beautiful pauses. Hello, we're the Friedmans!

We don’t just grow flowers for quaint special occasions; we grow them for the bedside table, the kitchen window, and every unwritten moment in between. We moved to Granville at the end of 2023 and decided amidst several projects to start a cut flower farm! I've always loved having fresh cut flowers in our home, I feel it brings a sense of comfort and growing our own flowers has always been a dream

of mine. I find it amazing that every flower is unique in it's own way and am always on the hunt for uncommon varieties. We are thrilled to be able to share an abundance of pesticide-free flowers with our community. For our first growing year, 2024, we will likely remain a porch-pickup setup until we know what to expect in terms of flower growth. We will post to this page when we have bouquets available for pickup, so keep an eye out for notifications!

We’re all just survivin’ out here…right?
Little 5min evening walk with Pen to give y’all an update on what we’ve been up to! No deep, in depth caption for this one…I’ve got a kiddo with a fever, a husband with walking pneumonia and a pup that’s walking sideways…😅 if there’s slack to be cut by golly cut it now.

But in all seriousness, the seedlings are SO ready for the warm weather to hit so they can be planted outside. We’ve got wood chips to pickup from Grandma’s for the pathways once we get the w**d barrier back down and then we can plop these happy plants outside in their new digs! It truly takes a village, and our village is really Awesomesauce.

Estimated number of plants in our house: 2,800 (give or take a handful). Actual houseplants: 5

Soil blocking all day everyday.

Saturday: Tilling complete! With breaking so much new ground, tilling seemed to be the way to go. Hoping to avoid it next season so we don’t disturb the soil so much 🤞🏼

Our soil tests came back as having high magnesium and calcium, which is fine unless your magnesium is higher than the calcium (my understanding)…which ours is. The high magnesium leads to compact soil (think sticky when wet) which keeps crops from taking up nutrients as they should and it also leads to poor water drainage. To balance our levels out we’ve added crushed lime and compost into the soil. We had to go with a manure-free compost because manure will add magnesium to the soil…which makes sense as to why our soil read so high in that category…it used to be a 🐮 pasture!

With our amendments incorporated into the soil we shouldn’t have to soil test again for a bit. Hopefully our flowers like it, because…well they just better!

Thankful to our friends at Paisley’s rental in Newark for supplying us with a workhorse tiller so I could even sneak in a surprise flower bed without anyone noticing. Less grass= less mowing…so really I’m just helping.

There are some tool sounds that now make my husband very alert when he hears me starting them up…drill (I’ve been known to randomly hang things..without measuring), hammer (because of the time I was going to the kitchen to refill our coffees and ended up opening up part of a wall looking for a brick chimney…I mean, I found it 🤷🏼‍♀️) and now…tiller.

Planting springtime flowers around our home never really resonated with me. They always seem so fleeting and the varieties I saw didn’t spark a lot of personal interest.
That is until we “survived” our first winter in this 136 year old home. Original windows, no weatherstripping, storm windows that were falling apart, a wood burning stove setup that wasn’t safe to use…our hot water was turned off because it was improperly venting through the chimney where the wood burner also vented. 55 degrees…we kept our house at 55 degrees to try to keep pipes from freezing, but to keep the propane bill as low as possible. And let me tell ya, the pipes still froze. And then finally the snow melted, we thawed out and these little buds starting poking out of the soil EVERYWHERE. Crocus, snow drops, daffodils of all colors and scents, Lily of the valley, Virginia bluebells, tulips, hellebores, things I had never heard of…it was like a symphony of life, every few days something new would peek out of the ground. Those springtime blooms brought excitement and life back into my soul and I will forever have a fondness of them for it.

While winters feel a bit different these days with some restoration projects under our belt and about a mile of weatherstripping installed, it still brings me immense joy to see those first sprouts popping up. A reminder that warmer weather is coming and it’s time to wake up!

Wishing you and yours a Happy Easter and a happy springtime awakening 🌷

It’s a tad windy today, but we got our first flower planted! Thank goodness because this variety has been a little needy in the grow room. Eats a lot, requires a lot of praise and can be quite messy! This particular flower is 13 years young and responds to Penelope, Pretty Pen and Strawberry Jelly Penelly which obviously will require an additional explanation post.

Happy Friday, try not to blow away! 🌻

We’re learning!
What we’ve learned in a nutshell today:
- 40mph wind gusts bad
- boots good
- Barbed wire + landscape fabric = THE WORST
- Mother nature will always win
- It’s always best to take a few breaths before tackling a miserable task and having a treat after certainly doesn’t hurt.

We were skeptical of the estimated snowfall totals, but they were accurate! A thick, 12” fluffy blanket of snow has tucked our field in for the foreseeable future as the forecast shows nothing but sub 30 degree temperatures for the next two weeks 🥶

Stay warm out there!!

The calm before the storm. A foot of snow is forecasted to quietly fall upon our field this weekend and we cannot help but to be excited at how picturesque it will be! The negative temps can however move along.

A little peek into why we use landscape fabric!
(And will reuse this same fabric that’s currently laid for years to come until it withers away).

Seed, corm, tuber, plug order day 🎉
The holidays have come and gone, our little guy’s first birthday prep and party flew by, the rush of chaotic fun has passed. A calm moment has crept in so we’re taking advantage and sitting down with a yummy sandwich & soup duo at to put our orders in to make sure we’re ready to start indoor sowing in the next few weeks!

Stay tuned for a sneak peek on what we’ll be growing on the farm!
