Letâs talk candle safety!
Recently, someone reached out with some very strong words about our product being âdangerous.â While the delivery wasnât easy to read, the topic is important.
So letâs be clear:
A candle is an open flame. Whether itâs $10 or $100, no candle is risk-free if itâs not used properly. Thatâs just the nature of fire.
At Silva House, we put a great deal of care into the design and testing of our candles. But once a candle leaves our hands, it enters yoursâand thatâs where safe, mindful use *really* matters.
Here are a few key reminders we stand by:
⨠Trim the wick to 1/4â before each use. This ensures a controlled and efficient burn and prevents soot, black smoke, and potential safety hazards.
⨠Burn on a heat-safe, sturdy surface such as glass, stone, ceramic, etc. Metal tins get *very* hot. Wood (no matter how hard) is never ever a suitable surface for a burning candle.
⨠Never leave a burning candle unattended. Like, ever. No exceptions.
⨠Keep away from anything remotely flammable. We recommend a safety zone of at least 2 feet from any object including furniture, curtains, bedding, carpets, books, paper, etc. Probably the most common mistake we see is burning a candle on a shelf, which could cause the shelf above it to burn.
⨠Donât blow it outâhot wax can splatter. We recommend using the candleâs lid which is included with every candle.
⨠Do not burn longer than four hours at a time. Extended burning can cause the wick to become unstable, leading to a larger, unpredictable flame and increased soot production.
Our intention has always been to offer something more than just fragrance and flameâweâre here to create moments of calm, comfort, and serenity, and that includes encouraging safe, respectful use of the products we all enjoy.
Weâre proud of what we make. We love our customers. We will always be here to answer questions, offer guidance, and share knowledge.
Warmly,
The Silva House Team
