A quick note for the holiday weekend 🌿

The Big Greenhouse will be CLOSED Monday, September 7th, in observance of Labor Day.

Labor Day is an opportunity to recognize the hard work, dedication, and contributions of the people who help our businesses, families, and communities grow.

We hope everyone enjoys a safe and restful Labor Day weekend.

We’ll be back in the greenhouse Tuesday, September 8th, from 10:00 AM–4:00 PM.

Meet ‘Vogue.’ It deserves a proper introduction.

Vriesea ‘Vogue’ is one of those bromeliads that makes you stop for a second look — deep burgundy color, brilliant yellow accents and a form that is anything but ordinary.

And it’s a beautiful example of just how varied the bromeliad family can be.

From the silvery foliage and soft pink bloom of Aechmea fasciata to the slender leaves and vivid pink of Tillandsia cyanea — and all the colors, shapes and forms in between — these plants can look remarkably different while belonging to the same family.

A fresh shipment has added even more bromeliads and tropicals to The Big Greenhouse, with beautiful quality, color and variety throughout.

Come wander. This is one of those times when the pictures only tell part of the story.

A flowering fern that doesn’t actually flower? 🌿

Meet Anemia mexicana, commonly known as the Mexican Flowering Fern — and its name is a little misleading.

Despite the name, it doesn’t produce flowers. Those unusual structures that look a bit like flowering stalks are actually specialized fertile portions of the fronds that produce spores.

Native to Mexico and parts of Texas, this fern naturally grows around rocky slopes, ravines and limestone areas — not necessarily the setting most of us picture when we think of a fern.

We also love the foliage itself. The irregularly shaped fronds range from fresh, bright green to deeper mature green, giving the plant plenty of texture even without a single flower.

🌿 CARE: Bright, indirect or filtered light • Keep the soil evenly moist, but not soggy • Good drainage • Appreciates humidity

Not every Anthurium looks the way you expect. 👑🌿

Meet Anthurium ‘King of Kings’ — also known as Golden Cardboard Anthurium, an uncommon collector plant with striking golden-green foliage and a distinctive bird’s-nest growth habit.

Take a closer look and you’ll see what makes it especially interesting: thick, substantial leaves with beautiful texture and pronounced veining — the characteristic that inspired that wonderfully unexpected “Cardboard Anthurium” name.

As it matures, those leaves form an increasingly bold, architectural rosette.

A different side of the Anthurium family — and a beautiful one to see up close.

We snapped these just after the rain this week, and they were too beautiful not to share. 💧🌿

Known to many as Philodendron selloum and botanically as Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum, this is a plant made for making a statement.

Those enormous, deeply cut leaves can reach several feet in length, and given the room, the plant itself can grow into an impressive specimen. Indoors, give it plenty of space, good light and well-drained soil—and don’t be afraid to let it enjoy a warm summer outdoors in a protected spot.

And those raindrops? They suited it perfectly.

For a room that needs something more than a little green, this is the kind of plant that can transform a space.

Back to School, Part 2: Classroom Plants 101 🌿📚

As classrooms begin filling up again, a little green can be a lovely finishing touch. Plants bring life and color to a room and can help make a classroom feel warmer, calmer and more welcoming—for students and for the teachers who spend their days there.

Something extraordinary is waiting to bloom. 🌿

There’s something especially exciting about a Paphiopedilum, often called the Lady Slipper Orchid. With its distinctive pouch-shaped bloom and beautifully mottled foliage, it’s one of the most unique orchids you’ll encounter.

Paphiopedilums arrived with our latest orchids, and they’re still in the bud stage—making the anticipation part of the experience. There’s something wonderful about watching those remarkable flowers slowly open over time.

Lady Slippers have a way of finding new homes quickly when they arrive. With foliage this striking even before the flowers open, it’s easy to see why.

If you’ve never seen a Lady Slipper Orchid in person, stop by The Big Greenhouse and take a closer look. You just might discover a new favorite.
