Materials
Seashells
Natural seashells (clam, scallop, oyster, or snail shells work best)
Shells should be clean, dry, and deep enough to hold liquid
Small tray, bowl, or egg carton (to keep shells upright)
Crystal Solution
Borax powder (laundry aisle)
Very hot water (near boiling; adult supervision required)
Food coloring for turquoise tones
Blue food coloring (base)
Green food coloring (for turquoise depth)
Optional: a tiny drop of yellow for warm sea tones
Tools
Heat-safe measuring cup or bowl
Spoon
Teaspoon
Paper towels
Step 1: Prepare the Seashells
Rinse shells thoroughly to remove sand or residue.
Scrub gently if needed and let dry completely.
Make sure the inside of each shell is clean and free of debris.
Place shells open-side up on a tray so they sit level and stable.
Optional texture boost:
Brush a very thin layer of white glue inside each shell and allow it to dry. This helps crystals grip and grow thicker.
Step 2: Make the Saturated Crystal Solution
Heat 1 cup of water until very hot (almost boiling).
Slowly stir in 3 tablespoons of Borax.
Continue stirring until no more Borax dissolves.
A small amount settling at the bottom means the solution is fully saturated.
Create the turquoise color:
Add 4–6 drops blue food coloring
Add 1–3 drops green food coloring
Optional: 1 tiny drop yellow for a sunlit ocean tone
Stir gently until the color is evenly mixed.
Multiply the recipe as needed if filling multiple shells.
Step 3: Fill the Seashells
Carefully spoon or pour the hot solution into each seashell.
Fill nearly to the rim, avoiding spills.
Leave shells completely undisturbed once filled.
Step 4: Grow the Crystals
Place the tray in a warm, vibration-free area.
Crystals begin forming within 1–3 hours.
Allow crystals to grow for 8–24 hours for thick, faceted turquoise clusters.
Longer growth time creates larger, more dramatic crystal formations.
Step 5: Drain and Dry
Gently pour off any remaining liquid from each shell.
Place shells on paper towels.
Allow to air-dry completely for 1–2 hours.
