The back windows in this South Jersey home took the full force of the afternoon sun, and the living room got uncomfortably warm because of it.

We fit them with custom shutters, which block the harshest light and cut down on the heat coming through the glass. The part my clients like best is the vanes. Tilt them one way and the glare is gone, tilt them a little less and you can still see the yard. They keep their view and the room stays comfortable, which is a pretty good trade for one window treatment.

Change the fabric, the trim, or what you layer over it, and a Roman shade becomes a completely different window. These four are from a recent project, and each one shows a different way to take a simple shade further.

The first has a shaped scalloped bottom, faced in a small check so the curve stands out, and finished with coral tassel trim. The second has an inset linen band with mitered corners and a thin green welt along the edge. In the third, the shade sits under an arched cornice with a pleated, tassel-trimmed skirt, and the shade itself finishes with a navy band and brush fringe. And in the last one, we cut the plaid so the lines run straight from the valance down through the shade, which takes careful measuring but makes the window read as one piece.

If your shades still have a cord hanging down the side, this is the month to do something about it.

October is Window Covering Safety Month, and cords remain one of the easiest hazards in a home to overlook because they've been there for years. Motorized shades and draperies take the cord out of the picture. You raise and lower them with a remote, an app, or a voice command through your smart home system, and the window looks cleaner without anything hanging off it.

I love an arched window, and so did the owners of this Burlington County home. They wanted the arch to stay the star of the room, and once I saw the fall color filling the glass, I completely agreed.

We framed the windows with tailored stationary panels that sit just outside the trim, so the curve of the arch stays fully visible. The room gets the softness of drapery and keeps every bit of the light, along with the view of those trees.

Top-down, bottom-up is the shade I suggest most often for bathrooms, and this primary bath is a good example of why.

These Hunter Douglas Vignette shades lower from the top, so the sky comes in while everything below stays private. Tile runs up the walls and across the floor, and the vanity top is stone, leaving little to soften the light. The fabric folds of a Vignette bring softness and luxury to an otherwise hard space, and you never have to give up natural light to get your privacy.

Behind the curtain on a commercial install day.

Every project through our commercial division, Window Alternatives, runs the same way — organized, methodical, and ready for whatever the day brings. Trent keeps a tight ship from the moment we arrive, and that preparation is exactly why everything lands cleanly.

This senior living project at Lantern Hill in New Providence, NJ was a collaboration with the interior design team at MOII. Custom drapery panels with layered sheers on decorative double traversing rods — hardware that lets both treatments operate independently while keeping the sheers neatly tucked behind the panels at all times.

Residents get full light control, beautiful panels flanking the windows all day, and a dining room that feels warm and residential. That's the standard we hold for every commercial project.

Part of our job is listening to what a client wants. The other part is knowing how to get there.

This client wanted filtered light and needed minimal privacy from the backyard — straightforward enough. But they also asked why we weren't treating the transom window above the sliding glass door with the same cornice as the window. We explained that mounting there would visually cut the room in half and make it feel much smaller than it is.

Instead, Hunter Douglas Luminettes cover both the door and the transom with a beautiful ripplefold header. On the window, a cornice conceals the Silhouette headrail to finish the look. The light filters through beautifully, the room stays open, and every element works together the way it should.
