You’ve probably seen one during a rainstorm... and never realized it was doing a very important job. 👀
Meet the scupper.
It’s the opening that allows water to drain off a flat roof, balcony, deck, or parapet wall before water starts pooling where it shouldn’t.
Think of it as an overflow exit for rainwater.
Without a scupper, water can collect on flat surfaces, adding thousands of pounds of extra weight and increasing the risk of leaks, structural damage, and costly repairs.
Where you’ll commonly find them 👇
🏢 Commercial buildings with flat roofs
🏠 Modern homes with parapet walls
🌿 Rooftop patios and terraces
🛠️ Balconies and drainage systems
Why they matter:
• Direct water away from the structure
• Prevent standing water buildup
• Reduce the risk of roof leaks
• Help protect walls, foundations, and building materials
Fun fact 💡
A clogged scupper can cause major water issues surprisingly fast. That’s why routine roof maintenance often starts with checking drainage points before the rainy season arrives.
It’s not the flashiest piece of building hardware...
But when a storm rolls in, you’ll be very glad it’s there 😅
