The culmination of my Sunday Fun Day… a freshly discovered work by Maria Barosso (1879–1960), one of Italy’s most remarkable yet long-overlooked artist-archaeologists.

Barosso was a true pioneer—the first woman appointed to Italy’s Directorate of Antiquities and Fine Arts and the only female draughtswoman documenting many of Rome’s most important archaeological excavations in the early 20th century. Her watercolor paintings are far more than works of art; they are invaluable historical records, preserving monuments, neighborhoods, excavations, and architectural details that have since disappeared from the Roman landscape.

For decades her contributions remained largely underappreciated, but recent scholarship has brought her back into the spotlight. In 2025, Rome’s Centrale Montemartini hosted the first major museum retrospective devoted entirely to her work, recognizing her unique role in preserving the visual history of a rapidly changing Rome.
