Him: Neon or bright color day.

Me: Cool. You wanna lay out your clothes tonight?

Him: I don’t have anything neon or bright.

Me: (considers his capsule wardrobe I made him during summer break to prep for the year and realizing he’s completely correct). Oh.

Him: are you going to sew something tonight? It’s a good thing your the best sewer in all of Ohio.

Though its not true, imma gonna let that flattery land. So here I am, after a full day of sewing drapes, making a hideous neon green tee shirt that would do a construction worker proud. s

Every once in a while the stars align: fabric gets back ordered, an install gets delayed, and a designer needs extra time to confirm details with a customer. When that happens, I can wind up having a day where I have things to do, but can’t do any of them.

When that happens, I could get annoyed, but I don’t! Instead I take the day to get back to the sewing that inspired me to really learn the intricacies of the craft: couture dresses!

This dress took me 7 hours to make yesterday. The fabric is the most delicate cotton lawn fabric by Liberty of London. I constructed it using only couture stitchings: French seams, hand finished linings, and bias enclosed hems, so there are absolutely no raw edges anywhere to touch the skin. The oversized bow is gathered and attached inside the front darts. The bodice is fully lined. The front placket is finished in the same fiddly way a dress shirt is constructed. Oh, and the heart shaped elbow patches? 😍LOVE😍

In short, I used close to every skill I’ve ever learned on this dress… and my daughter will probably spill ice cream on it at the daddy/daughter dance this weekend.

I didn’t get before pics, but trust me: it was time for an upgrade. The old sheers had been in the window since the first owner built the house in the 60s! They had lived through a small fire, a few broken windows and a full window replacement. They were yellowed, stretched out, and just done.

I was thrilled to stitch up these lovely sheers for the customer to last the next 50 years or so! Quality custom drapery is an investment, but so worth it!

One foot board complete: two layers of foam, one layer of batting, pieced widths of fabric together to get the king size. Lots of piping and a little extra fabric to wrap it up.

Wont be getting the box spring until Tuesday and I may give the paint a couple extra days to cure, but should be able to share the finished product by next weekend!

Weekend work in progress! This one is for me, and I’m so excited! It started out as a $14 thrift store wooden bed frame and I can’t wait til it’s done. Today after church I’ll work on the footboard and maybe do some assembly.

Fabric is “Birds and the Bees” from Carole Fabrics.
Paint is “Land of Liberty” by Benjamin Moore in satin
