It was during the depression years that Ghlee and Dorothy Stephens settled in Havana and started their business. In 1936, the store was moved to 316 West Main and operated as a feed and produce store until 1941, when it was moved to the present location of 112 North Schrader. At the new location, Stephens went into the Purina business, as well as buying eggs and cream from local farmers and hatchi
ng baby chicks. Some may remember the building when it was painted in red and blue checkerboard! The big scale used at that time to weigh cream is presently being used to weigh customers. In 1958, due to changing times, the business was changed to a furniture store. Ghlee’s sons, Jerry, Ed and Dudley, worked in the business at that time. In 1979, Ghlee died, and after Dorothy’s re-marriage and move from the community, the store was put in the able hands of Dudley, his wife Shirley, and his son, Geoffrey. Now, 54 years later, the store is run by Geoffrey, his wife Joyce, and two of his children, Andrew and Allyson. We are open Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm, and Saturday, 8:00am to 12:00pm. We offer gift certificates, free delivery, and offer many lines of furniture and floor coverings that appeal to all.
