Shop opening in 2018. We had a very limited budget for products, after spending so much on the remodeling. How many of you remember the tipi that sat in the back of the store for kids to experience?

In our first location, Major was determined to restore an exterior wall ghost sign that had been painted over in our interior. Fellow artist, Annie and he worked tirelessly to carefully remove paint and not deface the glory of the Cafeteria. The Eybel's part was not accessible as it is covered by the drop ceiling. Eybel's, a beloved historic downtown eatery, was established by German immigrant Charles Eybel in the 1920's. The Cafe would later evolve into the Cafeteria. The exterior building is currently home to the Painted Pot. We received a historic preservation award for our efforts, which is still hanging in the space now occupied by Downtown Helena.

Eight years ago, when the old Montana Book & Toy Co had an open rental spot off Jackson St, we took the plunge to launch Sage & Oats. We officially signed our first lease in March of 2018, but didn't open until mid-June in order to prepare the space.

With the help of friends and family, we transformed our first location, but in our second year Covid struck and nonessentials, like ours, were forced to close. We quickly assessed options. We loved our first location, but people simply couldn't find us and we couldn't continue to live off $50/day sales. We knew we poured a lot of ourselves and our savings into renovating the location, but we had to move where we could increase foot traffic in order for the business to survive.

We started all over with remodeling in preparation to move in with Buzz Boutique as a collaborative shop. We shared, we'd be two shops stitched together to help one another stabilize during Covid. Coupled with launching our online shop through Etsy we were able to come out the other side. We know we are one of the lucky ones. As many across our nation did not make it and closed.

There have been many people who helped us get to where we are today. We are so grateful to everyone who has played a part in this journey and will be highlighting their faces and contributions as we celebrate our 8th year.
