Say WHAT? You need more Parsley??? Female Black Swallowtails seek parsley because it belongs to the carrot family (Apiaceae). Parsley contains chemical compounds that the butterfly can detect, signaling a suitable place to lay eggs. Once the eggs hatch, the caterpillars readily eat the parsley leaves. Other favorite host plants include dill, fennel, carrots, Queen Anne’s lace, and rue.
