Meet one of the most beautiful outhouse we've ever shipped a toilet to. 🦋

Scott built this from reclaimed wood next to his off-grid tiny house in California's high desert, among the Joshua trees — a black sliding barn door, an outdoor vanity with a copper basin, and inside, a white porcelain pedestal framing wide desert views.

Under the floor, set about 15 inches into the ground, sits a CF 4 waterless toilet system — no septic tank, no water lines to bury or freeze. The vent fan runs entirely on solar, so the whole build stays off the grid.

It's proof that "outhouse" doesn't have to mean rustic and smelly. Done right, a waterless toilet can be the nicest room on the property.

It looks like a normal toilet. It needs no water, no plumbing, and no septic tank.

The GL 90's ceramic pedestal sits in the bathroom like any other toilet. What is different is underneath: the composting container sits below floor level, out of sight, and waste drops straight into it. Liquid separates off, continuous airflow keeps the air moving, and over time what is left becomes compost.

Servicing is a swap, not a chore. When one container fills, you seal it, slide the spare in, and the toilet is back in use immediately. It takes minutes, needs no tools, and every part of it happens outdoors — nothing is carried through the house.

Comfortable for 2–3 people full time, or 4–5 part time. Needs 18 inches of clearance below the floor.

Every flush needs somewhere to go — and off-grid, that part is the expensive one.

A septic system has to be permitted, excavated and maintained. On difficult ground it is the single most expensive part of adding a bathroom, and sometimes the soil or the setbacks mean it simply cannot be done.

A waterless toilet takes the pipe out of the equation. Waste falls into a chamber where microorganisms break it down. Liquid is drained away from the solids — that is the part that decides whether it smells. And air is pulled continuously out through a vent, so the room stays fresh.

There are only two ways to build one: the chamber sits below the floor, or inside the unit itself. Which one suits you is decided by your building, not your preference only.

Climbing down a ladder at 2 a.m. — that's the bathroom most treehouses settle for. It doesn't have to be.

Trees move, grow, and shift with the seasons, so rigid plumbing never works up there. A split-system waterless toilet does: the porcelain pedestal sits in the treehouse, the composting container stays on the ground — up to 10 feet below. Gravity does the rest.

A properly set up waterless toilet does not smell. Here's why: it separates liquids from solids and uses constant airflow (a small vent fan) to pull air out from the composting bin and pushes it up to the sky, not into your bathroom.
