Florence Knoll’s approach to design is exactly what we mean when we say touch history, design the future. When you look back, you begin to see the thread that runs through the industry even now.

Reposted • Florence Knoll helped invent the office most people still work in.

Born on 24 May 1917 in Saginaw, Michigan, Knoll trained through Cranbrook, the Architectural Association, Columbia and IIT, where she studied under Mies van der Rohe. Her route into interiors came through architecture, which explains why her rooms rarely feel like decoration. She treated offices as systems: desks, chairs, textiles, lighting, art, storage, circulation and sightlines all planned together.

In 1943, she created the Knoll Planning Unit. By the postwar office boom, the unit was working with corporate clients including CBS, IBM, General Motors and the Seagram Building. The paste up boards became part of the method. Clients could see fabrics, surfaces, furniture, colours and spatial arrangements before the room existed.

Knoll’s own furniture, including sofas, desks, tables and storage pieces, sat inside that wider practice. The work looked simple because the decisions were precise: proportion, material, upholstery, scale and use.

The Devil Wears Prada did not disappoint when it came to featuring design-famous furniture and decor. If you’ve seen the sequel, you may have spotted another round of gems like the Herman Miller Saiba chairs and this modern take on Royère’s iconic mid-century Parisian design.

Reposted • When The Devil Wears Prada 2 opened on 1 May, the fashion world dissected the clothes. Design obsessives went straight for the chairs. The pair opposite Miranda Priestly’s desk appear to be the Méandre side chair by Design Frères (), the furniture line founded in 2010 by French-born, Los Angeles-based designer Eric Thévenot. The Méandre traces its formal vocabulary to Jean Royère, whose metalwork bent and looped with a freedom unusual for mid-century French design, finding clients from Paris to Tehran to Cairo. Thévenot’s version keeps the line and moves the atelier to LA. Whether or not the production team confirmed the sourcing, it is exactly the kind of choice that rewards close looking.

This solid teak sideboard is a direct translation of the Streamline Moderne movement. Notice the deliberate absence of sharp corners, replaced entirely by sweeping Style Paquebot curves and radiused D-end shelves. The upper structure is distinctly elevated by spherical spacers, giving a heavy, substantial piece of storage an unexpected lightness and continuous lateral flow.⁠
