This project is located in the Hardscrabble neighborhood of Hillsborough. The first task was to tear out the laminate tile in their living room. Next we tore out the particle board underlayment to get down to the level of the original plywood subfloor directly over floor joists. To remove the particle board, I pulled the nails one by one and lifted the large sheets out whole. Once the particle board was all removed, we discovered some rot and delamination in the plywood subfloor. Those areas were cut out and replaced, as well as some rotten wood under the exterior door. To transition into the front room, we cut the existing board ends straight in the doorway with a track saw and installed two perpendicular boards as a header or flush saddle. Before installing any hardwood flooring, everything was checked with a moisture meter to confirm proper acclimation. Matching Select grade White Oak hardwood flooring was then installed in this room. White Oak flush vents were installed with the new flooring and retrofitted into the existing hardwood flooring. The large opening into the eat-in dining room had two decorative columns that the customer wanted removed, so we removed those for him before sanding and finishing the floor. The kitchen and hallway leading into the dining room had some water damage and gapping caused by a flood. The customer wanted this flooring replaced. Since he was going to have the kitchen redone soon, we went ahead and removed the kitchen island and patched up the hole for the range downdraft vent. Since the kitchen flooring was installed under the cabinets, we had to cut it flush with the toe kicks before removing the hardwood flooring. After removing the kitchen flooring, the vent hole in the plywood subfloor was patched and new matching Select White Oak hardwood flooring was installed and laced in to the dining room. A few boards were replaced in the eat-in dining room and bathroom at the customer's request. The entire first floor was resurfaced and finished with Aboritec Genuine 5 ceramic fortified Ultra-Matte Sheen commercial grade two component water-based polyurethane. The customer wanted the lightest possible natural color without tinting or staining, so we used a special water-based sealer engineered to block the tannins from coming out in White Oak. Primed shoe molding was installed at the end of the job. The customer was amazed at how well I was able to match the existing 30-year-old White Oak hardwood flooring!

This once grand staircase has been neglected too long. It’s finally time to restore the original glory and we CAN’T WAIT for you to see the final result. The beautiful wood under all that grime is just 😍!

We have moved on the the finishing stages at the Heck-Andrews House Historic Restoration in Downtown Raleigh. We had to carefully tear out and reinstall these original 150 year old Antique Heart Pine boards to allow access for HVAC duct installation. Here I am applying Poloplaz Fast Dry Sanding Sealer to the Flooring. This oil-based sealer enhances the natural tones of the wood while providing reliable dry times, helping us keep the project on schedule. Top coats will be PoloPlaz Primero Matte oil-modified polyurethane.

This repost features some of my work at the Heck-Andrews House Historic Restoration in Downtown Raleigh. I spent 2 weeks last summer sanding and hand scraping the 28 Antique Heart Pine treads of this spiral staircase and landing at the top of the tower. We had to wait until now to apply finish because all the other trades had not completed their work. We are currently in the final stages of this project.

Light colored Hardwood Floors have been making a comeback in recent years. Maple is one of my personal favorites! It is a very durable Domestic Hardwood with a light natural color and clean grain pattern. We use a special waterbased sealer made by called Lock 'N Seal that keeps the color light. The top coats are Street Shoe NXT, a commercial grade, non-yellowing, 2 component waterbased polyurethane with a UV light inhibitor that keeps the color light for years to come. This combination gives a true natural, light colored Hardwood Floor that doesn't require bleach, stain, or tinted sealer to achieve the result. This Chapel Hill custom home had a roof leak which spurred the homeowners to go ahead and have their Hardwood Floors refinished after putting it off for years. They were ecstatic with the results and wished they had done it sooner!

This customer in the Old Hope Valley Neighborhood of Durham had their kitchen remodeled. The new cabinets didn't quite cover the same footprint as the old ones, leaving some areas exposed that did not have Hardwood Flooring. We were able to source matching 5 inch wide Select White Oak Hardwood Flooring and patch up the necessary areas with a lace-in repair. The entire kitchen and eat-in dining room were then refinished, which involved sanding down to the bare wood, staining a custom mixed color to match adjacent rooms, and finishing with a top of the line oil-modified polyurethane. We custom mixed the satin and matte sheens of Primero polyurethane to match the sheen of existing finish in adjacent rooms. We normally use a 2 component commercial grade water-based polyurethane in occupied homes to minimize disruption, but that would not have matched the amber hue of the existing oil-modified polyurethane. Oil-modified polyurethane has an amber tint to it which continues to darken with age and exposure to UV light.

I refinished this Brazilian Cherry floor for some friends who just bought a house in Youngsville. Brazilian Cherry (Jatoba) is a very hard and dense wood from Brazil. It is light-sensitive and darkens with exposure to UV sunlight. Another property of this tropical wood is naturally occurring oils that can cause adhesion problems with the finish. We used a special shellac based sealer to help with this. Brazilian Cherry is not an easy wood to sand because of its high rating on the Janka hardness scale. Harder woods such as Maple and Brazilian Cherry require refinishing by a hardwood flooring contractor who does not skip steps in the sanding process. This floor had existing deep sanding scratches, drum marks, and peeling finish from the poor craftsmanship of a previous contractor. The homeowners did not realize how bad it was and were extremely happy that they had me refinish the floor! We were able to make it look new again and the results were truly stunning. There are usually outlines of furniture and rugs left in this type of floor when people move out. We were able to sand out these color change outlines and make them disappear with our extensive resurfacing process. Shellac sealer brings out incredible depth in the exotic hardwood grain patterns. Primero satin top coats have excellent durability and had the perfect amount of shine to satisfy the customer.

This video was taken during the refinishing of a staircase in a South Durham home. I wanted to highlight the extensive steps we take to prevent dust from entering other parts of an occupied home. Main staircases are usually in centralized, open areas that are difficult to seal off for dust. The ZipWall system is what we use to help with our dust containment. These same systems are being used in healthcare facilities to make temporary isolation areas. The ZipWall system consists of multiple adjustable poles with a special spring-loaded foot on top that clamps the plastic in place. We also use Oneida Air Systems equipment as our primary dust collectors. The plastic barriers in doorway openings prevent any fine dust that may become airborne from entering other areas of the home. We were brought in to refinish this brand new staircase because the contractor who the homeowner originally hired to install it botched the stain job badly and refused to come back to fix it. After sanding all the old finish and stain off to get down to the bare wood, we water popped the Red Oak so it would accept more of the DuraSeal Espresso stain. Top coats are Basic Coatings Street Shoe Super Matte 2 component commercial grade water-based polyurethane.

Bamboo flooring started to become popular about 20 years ago, touted as an eco-friendly flooring alternative. Many of those old floors are now starting to show wear and need to be refinished. Bamboo flooring is not actually a solid product like a traditional Oak or Maple Hardwood. Each plank is composed of small pieces of bamboo glued together with an adhesive resin. Because of this, special techniques are required to refinish bamboo flooring. We refinished this bamboo floor in a Mid-Century Modern home in the Duke Forest neighborhood of Durham and it came out beautifully! Floor was sealed with Zinnser Sealcoat Shellac and topcoated with Primero Matte Oil-Modified Polyurethane. Blaze sandpaper was used to resurface the floor. products were used for dust collection.

180 year old East Raleigh home with 6.5" wide Reclaimed Antique Heart Pine plank flooring finished with Tung Oil based Original Sealer/Finish. Final coat will have a satin sheen which is not as shiny. Spike holes and knots were filled with Wood Flour Cement mixed with fine sanding dust. Reclaimed Antique Heart Pine is milled from large structural beams taken from demolished old factory buildings. Waterlox is hand made in Ohio by a 4th generation, family-owned company. The Original formula has been made since 1910 and is non-toxic when dry and fully cured. 90% of the resin portion of the formula is from renewable, natural resources. Tung oil is obtained by pressing the seed from the nut of the tung tree. The homeowner requested this finish for it's ease of maintenance and similarity to the old varnish on the home's existing flooring. Waterlox has excellent adhesion on wood containing a lot of natural sap and oil such as Antique Heart Pine. The drawbacks to this type of finish are its strong smell and long dry time. Waterlox requires 24 hours to dry between each of its 4 coats so don't use it if you're in a hurry. We had to tear out a horrible install done by a cheap flooring contractor in this room before doing extensive joist leveling and subfloor work to correct 180 years of sagging floor joists and settling. The homeowner was very happy with the solidity of this floor, especially since the previous contractor's work resulted in it bouncing like a trampoline.

Select Red Oak Hardwood Flooring Installation with matching flush mount vents in a newly closed in screened porch in Chapel Hill. This was sanded and custom stained to match the existing Red Oak Hardwood Flooring with a 3 to 1 mix of DuraSeal Provincial and Classic Gray. Finish coats are Basic Coatings Pure Matte, a very low sheen commercial grade 2 component water based polyurethane. The Hardwood Flooring is from Ten Oaks, a local mill in Stuart, VA. We are using their 3.25 X .75 inch unfinished Select grade Red Oak Hardwood Flooring with the patented Six Side Seal. Six Side Seal Hardwood Flooring has all the surfaces of each board coated with a sealer immediately after milling. This process helps with the stability of the Hardwood Flooring before installation and helps prevent movement, gapping, and cupping throughout its service life. This job was for a General Contractor in Chapel Hill who hired me to do the Hardwood Flooring Installation, Repair, and Refinishing for the remodel. These same homeowners had hired us to refinish all the Hardwood Floors and stairs in the house last June. We appreciate the homeowners recommending us to their General Contractor! Contractors struggle to find good, reliable Tradesmen in this time of ever growing skilled labor shortages. The Contractor complimented us on our previous refinishing, commenting on how he had never seen such extreme precision from any other Hardwood Flooring Company.
