Things to see near Hilo: Akaka Falls

Just north of Hilo (20 min), a short loop trail winds through rainforest to the 442-foot Akaka Falls. Ferns, orchids, and bamboo line the path, and the waterfall at the end is worth every step. Wear shoes with grip and bring a rain layer.

Located on the Hāmākua Coast, Waipiʻo Valley was the boyhood home of King Kamehameha I. An important place in Hawaiian history and culture, "The Valley of the Kings" is a sacred and beautiful spot. Though the valley itself is closed to non-residents, you can enjoy a bird's-eye view from the stunning Waipi’o Valley Lookout.
