We spent a lot of time this summer and early fall working on our backyard makeover in one way or another. This makes the third, and hopefully last, time we have completely renovated this space. I am so happy to finally be able to say that this project was completed last weekend. It took a long time to finish mostly because we did it all ourselves working on it whenever we could and as finances allowed. I am so proud of the outcome and the fact that we have this cozy space to enjoy as a couple or to use for larger family gatherings.
Before we could begin the project some old structures that were in bad shape had to be demolished, pavers pulled up from the previous patio and then the yard was cleared and leveled. We had a pergola and an old arbor that Tom built over 20 years years ago that could not be repaired so they had to come down. During this phase I realized that I did not want another backyard with lots of maintenance. I started researching cottage gardens and "no mow" landscapes as well as shade gardens. The first phase of the project was to re-use the concrete pavers we had pulled up to create a new patio for a wrought iron table and chairs I purchased on fb marketplace. The table and chairs needed a complete makeover but that is a story for another day. Next, Tom created a firepit area large enough for a firepit and four adirondeck chairs/loungers. Once the pit and chairs were in place we filled in the area with pea gravel. We added a small cottage garden area and created a walkway to the lower deck stairs. In addition, Tom installed four 10 foot 4Ã4 posts from which we hung LED string lights that we have put on a timer. We are adding new plants and groundcovers as we go. It will be some time before these really start to mature. In the meantime, we are getting some beautiful blooms from the Maiden's Blush Camellia in the back plant bed and some of the annuals that we planted around the 4Ã4 posts. The planters around the post were purchased from Bed, Bath & Beyond if anyone is looking for some. We filled the planters with a colorful mix of mostly annuals that add a lot of beautiful color to this otherwise neutral pallette. I love the way the light filters through the trees during the day and in the evening we get the glow from the string lights. On occasion a warm fire will light up the area even more.
So, what do you guys think about our backyard renovation?
