Make sure you sing and dance -The Dance of the North 🎶 extra hard this social season!!!

You will promote the cold weather. At temperatures nearing -30 the Emerald Ash Borer larvae won’t survive!

Symmetrical winter buds mark this stout twig of black ash (Fraxinus nigra), a stalwart of swampy northern woods. This ecologically and culturally important species in our region is under imminent threat by the emerald ash borer, and Native Plant Trust recently received funding to collect seed from black ash populations in northern New England for conservation purposes. Our online course Black Ash Conservation in New England will summarize our findings and explore black ash general ecology, habitat and identification, cultural importance, and conservation considerations. Don't miss this significant conservation class on Thursday, January 30, 6 - 7:30 PM. Sign up to enroll here: https://www.nativeplanttrust.org/events/black-ash-conservation-in-new-england/

Artifact of the Week: Fancy Basket (HM9748), Donated by Margaret Swan
In Wabanaki homelands the growing season was short and specific varieties of corn were developed that could be eaten green or used to make corn meal. Many were developed and grown here including Abenaki Flint Corn, Calais Flint Corn and Abenaki Rose. This basket by Kim Bryant, Penobscot celebrates the centrality of this crop to Wabanaki people.

If you'd like to own a beautiful piece of Wabanaki artistry, visit us for the 30th Annual Wabanaki Winter Market on December 14! You can find details about the Market here: https://umaine.edu/hudsonmuseum/wabanaki-winter-market/
