Welp, the power just went out, but I have a freshly brewed cup of tea, an empty spindle, and it’s release day for Spin Off Magazine Guess it’s time to sit down and really enjoy it. Thanks to all the great makers who made this issue what it is!

A little bit of deadline spinning. The wheel came in the mail yesterday, setup was a breeze, and I spun a full four ounces in an afternoon.

Thanks everyone for your comments, messages, texts, calls, and flowers. I still miss my studio buddy every day.

Full bobbin, broken heart. 💔

We said goodbye to our sweet boy. We knew it was coming but that didn’t make it any less painful. Odie was always around yarn and loved the smell of wool, but he knew the difference between a ball of yarn and a ball he could chase. However, as soon as it came off my loom, knitting needles, or sewing machine, he promptly claimed every textile he could.

As a border collie from working stock, he was very active in his younger years and could frequently be found with muddy paws following our many hikes. I think he’s earned his red clay halo a thousand times over.

I’m still spinning flax for about 30 minutes every morning. It’s dusty, so best done outside, but it’s too darn hot to do any time but dawn.

So the afternoon is for weaving (still with handspun, but wool this time). The pattern is Here Be Dragons! by Julie Beers. I was inspired to weave it after working on an article with her—even though it’s considered an advanced band and this is my first one! I had a few hiccups and thought this loom wouldn’t be the best—I thought the shafts would get in my way. Maybe they did a little at first, but they actually helped keep some of the dropped hole cards from going all twisty turvy, so it was actually a lucky choice. You can find the pattern on Little Looms Long Thread Media

Odie’s spending most of his days napping, with brief excursions outside to sniff around. He appreciates that tablet weaving doesn’t have treadles or a big beater—my floor looms were always too loud for his sensitive ears.

I do have a big antique hackle, but a floral frog works great for small amounts of flax. This is some from my garden. The overall quality of this batch has been variable—some is over-retted, some is under retted. This little bit is the longest fiber of the batch.

Spinning happened before the sun came up. Making progress on teaching myself a new way to draft. Bobbin looks much the same as it did yesterday.

I thought about bringing a spindle in the car while we wait for our vet appointment but decided it would probably be too dusty (with flax at least). So knitting it is. At 14, every trip to the vet is a betrayal but pup is too old and tired to make as big of a fuss about it. Just some side eye at Mom. Hopefully they can find what’s been bothering his old joints and help some with pain management.

Stage 4 of Tour de Fleece & my spinning so far-just 30 minutes in the morning while I sip my coffee. Practicing new ways to draft the fiber like I’ve seen fine linen spinners doing online, but it’s a little bit like learning to swim freestyle if all you know is backstroke—needing to totally relearn muscle memory. Flipping back to what you know when it feels out of control and then trying again.
