Honored to have been selected
for the restoration project of the circa 1726 Avery-Bennett clock in Boston’s Old North Church. I enjoyed caring for this historic clock and becoming a part of its history. Before and After. This 1880s Vienna Regulator had been brought into our shop and was in need of serious restoration work. This wall clock had the entire case reassembled after completing extensive casework repairs. The movement was restored starting with an ultrasonic cleaning, all pivots were polished, loose bearings replaced, all brass in the movement was polished and lacquered and new brass cable installed. Broken pendulum shaft was repaired and disc polished and lacquered. Broken glass was replaced and antique glass installed to match period of the clock. It was a challenging project and customer was very pleased with the result.

A great opportunity to study the art of clockmaking. There are fewer professionals out there now in a business that is not lacking for work. It’s a great and satisfying career for those who have mechanical and craftsmanship ability and have an interest in time and history.

Recent clock restoration project. Mora tall clock came to the shop in very poor condition. In starting movement restoration it was noted that most of the steel was quite rusty along with previous poor repair attempts as someone tried to make a repair to the strike main wheel and soldered it together from multiple pieces resulting in it no longer able to rotate with the corresponding pinion.

A new wheel had to be cut from a blank brass disc of the proper thickness. Once the center was set and proper diameter cut, the blank was placed on the gear cutter. Multiple passes were needed to achieve the proper tooth depth. A new click spring and ratchet were attached. New gear was matched up with original wooden barrel and tested with the corresponding pinion with a successful result.

Unique vintage 1920s International Time Company wall clock. These clocks were used in businesses for employees to punch in. They would slip in their time card and use bottom lever to punch in and punch out their time. The company later became IBM. Wind once a week, no chime.
