Herbal Spotlight: RED CLOVER
Red clover is a beautiful flowering food-herb known for her potent ability to care for women in many stages of life. Known for high vitamin, protein (yep! You read that right), and calcium and magnesium content, red clover supports the uterus, relaxes the nervous system, and promotes fertility by restoring balance to hormonal systems.
Some herbalists recommend stopping red clover once you conceive, and switching to alfalfa for its similar nutrient profile and a boost of vitamin K. (Alfalfa does not replace the fertility-boosting properties of red clover.) Postpartum use of red clover can help encourage good milk supply along with other nutritive herbs like raspberry leaf, alfalfa, nettle, and oat straw. It’s a great herb to have in your simple infusion rotation during those mineral-depleted, nerve-frying months of nursing. Add a teaspoon of peppermint for a brighter flavor when infusing simple nutritive herbs.
I love that I learned something new while researching this post—red clover can be used topically to soften hard or clogged milk ducts! Truly a workhorse herb.
Steep 1/4 to 1/2 cup of dried red clover flowers in a quart of water for 4 hours to create a potent infusion. Sip throughout the day.
