Casa Diem Life

Casa Diem Life I design warm, inviting, and low maintenance homes for families with packed schedules and open doors.

In this world of hustle and bustle, it is a luxury to have a home that invites everyone to slow down and stay a while.

I've been collecting doorways since I started watching Doctor Who 15 years ago.

I thought it was weird to constantly take pictures of doors, so I'd pretend I was pulling inspiration for my interior design clients.

The truth is that just the possibility of adventure is enough to make me happy, and doors herald adventure!

The beauty of the internet is that there are other door aficionados out there who might stumble across this post and think, "that's nice" 😊

You know my favorite thing about travel? There are no calories on vacation!

I absolutely WILL travel for food.

A town with a secret cheese recipe? I'm there!

The world's oldest sausage factory? Sign me up!

In an unrelated note, my pants don't seem to fit anymore.

This is one of my favorite vacation photos ever, taken in Orlando, Florida.

Hubby was entertaining the kids so I could sleep in. I swear they heard my eyelids open because they came crashing into the room to grill me on the day's itinerary.

I LOVE traveling with my kids. They get burnt out, too, and often request "family trips."

Of course, I always ask them if they've got "family trip money," because would I really be a black mother if I didn't?

Easy like Sunday morning 🏊‍♀️

This was my most recent snorkeling partner in PR, and it's a shame I don't remember her name! We had so much fun exploring the ocean floor.

She's a certified freediver, and I just dabble. Maybe someday I'll get serious 🫣

That said, when I'm exploring the deep, I never go alone. Playing in the ocean is like playing with a wild cat. Things can go sideways really fast.

I always tell my kids, "You must enter any body of water with the awareness that this might be the last thing you ever do."

Yes, we have fun in the water, but we don't play around down there.

Mom, if you're reading this, I only take the kids snorkeling in shallow waters with life vests on! 😅

I can't count the number of times I've told my kids not to pick things up off the floor, but the truth is it's one of the joys of childhood.

Somewhere on the road to adulthood, we lose our sense of wonder and start worrying about getting dirty.

I spent the morning of my return flight exploring a lagoon. I found gorgeous popweed, rocks, coral, crabs, fish, and an octopus who wanted to be left alone.

I lost track of time (another joy of childhood) and had to rush off to the airport with dripping wet braids 🥲

My Monday Mood

I've come to the realization that I have so much more free time during the week than I do on the weekends.

Between grocery shopping, meal prepping, cleaning, laundry, DIYs, kids sports, kids lessons, kids being kids... I have ZERO time for rest and relaxation.

Instead of feeling miserable on Sunday evenings about how tired I am, I'm going to bake a nap, massage, facial or nail appointment into every Monday.

Because good job to me for surviving the weekend!

On my last solo trip, I replaced coffee with a morning walk, and here's what I learned:

Free time is a luxury.

Waking up when my body feels rested instead of when the alarm rings is a luxury.

Having a safe, beautiful environment to explore at all hours of the day is a luxury.

Sitting in the sand with strangers, actively listening, laughing together, and patiently navigating language barriers are all luxuries!

Also, I don't actually like coffee. I've been going on more walks since I got back.

I asked my husband recently why we only visit zoos when we travel, when we have an amazing zoo right on our doorstep.

Neither of us has a good answer.

I think a lot of us forget that the places we live are places other people want to experience!

In this new month, check out your local tourism board like and try something new. Simplifying travel makes it more sustainable.

“Every time I slip into the ocean, it's like going home.” – Dr. Sylvia Earle

Every year we travel to at least one beach destination, because for some strange reason we've settled down in a city with no beaches. Or mountains. Or forests. Or rivers. Or seasons.

Don't get me started 🥲

It's probably for the best. Honestly, I'd probably forget how to relate with land people if I had the ocean available to me every day.

Cheers to my little blessing, who has taught me to slow down and solve my problems with snacks.

I know I missed national daughters' day by a mile, but I celebrate this amazing soul every day.

I don't know how I got lucky enough to be her mama, but I'm glad I did.

She's hands down my favorite travel buddy. Don't tell the others.

Social media once had me convinced that we needed new outfits for every trip we booked.

Man, I'm glad I snapped out of that quickly. These are the little things that make travel unnecessarily expensive.

We are the family who returns from trips bruised and exhausted because we've climbed onto, jumped into, swam through, and explored around everything in sight.

We pack for comfort. In fact, we pack clothes that we won't miss if they don't make it back in one piece 😅

Over time, I've created a travel capsule wardrobe, which I will share (soon) on the blog. Hold me to it.
