Street To Kitchen
2024 | Houston, Texas

Self-described as unapologetically and authentically Thai, Street to Kitchen is the dream of Chef Benchawan “Chef G” Painter and her husband, Graham. Their story began in Thailand, where they met, and continued in Houston through pop-ups at farms, bars, and markets before finding a permanent home in Second Ward.

Chef Painter’s cooking is rooted in the food she grew up eating in her grandmother’s neighborhood kitchen in Thailand. She brings those family recipes to Houston, pairing traditional Thai flavors with techniques learned in some of the city’s top restaurants. The result is a thoughtful meeting of East and West—deeply rooted in tradition, yet distinctly Houston.

Her sauces and curries are made from scratch with fresh ingredients sourced from local farms, while each dish balances bold Thai flavors with thoughtful technique and creativity.

The restaurant’s design reflects the energy and spirit of its food. The nearly 90-seat space was envisioned as an intimate, upscale “house party” infused with the energy of Bangkok. Vibrant pink accents, authentic Thai movie posters, energetic beats, a dedicated bar, and a walk-up window create a space that feels playful, nostalgic, and unapologetically vibrant. Now occupying 2,800 square feet inside The Plant, Street to Kitchen has come a long way from its original cramped gas-station location. Its name, however, remains a nod to its beginnings as a street-side pop-up—and to the tradition, community, and love story that started it all.

•James Beard Award (2023): Chef Benchawan “Chef G” Painter received the prestigious James Beard Award for Best Chef: Texas.

•Michelin Bib Gourmand: Street to Kitchen has been recognized by the Michelin Guide with a Bib Gourmand, honoring its high-quality food and good value.

JŪN
2022 | Houston, Texas

Located in the classic Houston Heights neighborhood, this property was originally a mid-century modern washateria, built in 1955. The chef couple, well-traveled art collectors, worked with the interior design team to bring organic forms and curved design elements to soften the original overall boxy shape. Yucatan aesthetic elements are woven throughout - dark woods, natural finishes, fluid shapes, warm tones - enhanced by the chef’s personal art collection. Large windows bring in an abundance of natural light to the airy, spacious dining room. The idea of mixing in a vaguely Asian aesthetic with South American influences was captured through hand-troweled wall plaster textures, strategically placed tropical plants, and artisanal ceramic decorative pieces.
‍
Taking center stage, the massive half-moon-shaped bar features a warm beige concrete top with an illuminated asymmetrical arched bar shelf. In the dining room, a central banquette wraps around a planter filled with exotic greenery, offering an intimate dining experience. The exposed reinforced steel building structure is neutralized in white, complemented by a paper mache fabric layering, adding a dimensional layer to the overall space. At night, glowing light from windows spills onto the outdoor sidewalk, and a custom sconce marks the entry.
‍
The design challenge for the interior was to incorporate soft textures such as plush fabrics, rounded furniture pieces, and gentle lighting to balance out the boxy architecture and create a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. Additionally, the use of natural materials such as wood, stone, and plants added warmth and softness.

The Lymbar
2021 | Houston, Texas

At the heart of The ION, Houston’s new tech hub in Midtown, The Lymbar is a Pan-South American, Lebanese, and Mediterranean fusion restaurant and bar with lounge tendencies that provides a hotel lobby-like space for both the building tenants and surrounding community. The design is an amalgamation of elements that tell the story of both the chef’s family and heritage that have inspired this concept. His childhood home on Lymbar St. was a mid-century ranch in an ethnically diverse neighborhood. Drawing inspiration from his experiences growing up, this restaurant embodies both the comfort of home and the energy of his dynamic community.

The design goal was to create an innate sense of comfort, familiarity, and well-being upon entering this space. A confluence of Latin American, Lebanese, and Mediterranean textures and art layered over a backdrop of classic mid-century materials such as warm woods, earthy colors, and lush greenery creates a lived-in and welcoming feeling.

Custom over-scale globes draped in moss and hanging plantings are suspended in front of floor-to-ceiling windows, creating drama, interest, and softness all at once. The foundational color palette used for the focal-point mural on the facade of the bar boasts vibrant earth tones like orange, red, and olive, which also informed the color palette of the plush custom furnishings.

Looking to the South American heritage of the chef’s family, the design takes cues from Brazilian art & architecture and Guatemalan Brutalism.

Daily Gather | CITYCENTRE Shopping Center
2022 | Houston, Texas

Daily Gather in CITYCENTRE features a warm, golden-hued interior that blends modern elegance with a welcoming, everyday neighborhood feel. The 9,000-square-foot restaurant combines touches of glitz with clean, contemporary lines, creating a chic yet approachable aesthetic reminiscent of modern retail design. The space features a striking brass back bar, custom artisan tiles, curated local artwork, and bespoke furnishings and fixtures, while large windows and comfortable seating create a variety of inviting vignettes throughout the dining room and bar. Designed to transition effortlessly from a bright, lively daytime lunch spot to a more intimate evening destination, the restaurant balances the atmosphere of an upscale brunch destination with the relaxed energy of a neighborhood gathering place. The Flat
2021 | Houston, Texas

The Flat in Houston’s Montrose neighborhood is a retro-cool lounge housed within a converted residential structure, where the existing domestic scale creates an intimate, layered atmosphere. Open for 21 years, the space leans heavily into midcentury-modern design, combining low-slung furniture, sculptural seating, mixed wood-and-metal finishes, comfortable sofas, and compact lounge zones that emphasize function and informality. Colorful, character-rich walls and warm, low ambient lighting establish a moody visual palette, while carefully curated furniture groupings and material contrasts create visual depth throughout the space. The design balances vintage residential character with a contemporary bar aesthetic, incorporating a full-service bar, integrated sound system, and flexible seating arrangements that encourage lingering and social interaction. During the day, the space supports a relaxed, café-like environment for coffee, meals, and remote work; at night, dim lighting, rich textures, music, and an intimate spatial arrangement transform the house into an atmospheric nightlife destination.

The Flat’s design and identity are deeply connected to its neighborhood roots, reflecting owner DJ SUN’s belief in community. “Our community is strong. Montrose has a very strong history and community, and it thrives, and it continues to thrive.” - houstonpress 2025
