“In a machine age, dressmaking is one of the last refuges of the human, the personal, the inimitable.” — Christian Dior
I made this dress to wear to a wedding in Mexico City.
For those that may not know, I studied fashion all through college and grad school. I have an apparel design degree and I used to teach sewing at the Art Institute. And yet when I sat down at my machine three years ago to make this dress after not sewing for over 12 years, I couldn’t even thread it.
It was not like riding a bike. 🙄
So, naturally, I hired Martha, an 82-year-old sewing instructor, to sit with me until it came back. And it did. Slowly, then all at once, the way things you’ve always known tend to return when someone you’re paying is watching.
For a long time I dreamed of coming back to fashion and designing evening and bridal wear. This dress was supposed to be the beginning of that. Turns out it was just a dress for a wedding in Mexico City. And honestly? I think I’m good with that.
